Academic Staff

Staff with teaching responsibilities at Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary

Nathan Bierma, Communications and Research Coordinator and adjunct professor of English, teaches Written Rhetoric. This course serves as an introduction to a liberal arts education and as a foundation for the college's Academic Writing Program. He is also a journalistic consultant to Chimes, the student newspaper.

Emily Brink, Senior Research Fellow and Editor Emeritus of Reformed Worship, teaches courses at both the college and seminary, including History and Philosophy of Music in Worship and The History and Theology of Sung Prayer, and leads the Chapel Planning team at the seminary.

Norma de Waal Malefyt, Resource Development Specialist for Congregational Song, teaches courses in piano and organ in the Calvin Music Department with an emphasis on musical leadership in worship.

Bert Polman, Senior Research Fellow and Professor of Music, teaches courses in music theory, history, and literature, and worship. He is chairperson of the Music Department at Calvin.

Kathy Smith, Director of Continuing Education and Making Connections Initiative, teaches The Theology and Practice of Pastoral Ministry at the seminary.

Howard Vanderwell, Resource Development Specialist for Pastoral Leadership.

John D. Witvliet, Director of CICW and Professor of Music and Worship, Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary.
