At the opening worship service tonight, Martha Fredricks, who represents the host church here in Utrecht, preached on the conference’s theme: “I am with you always.” She preached on the story of Joshua and Caleb returning from the Promised Land, telling the people that God would be with them despite the hardships they would endure. She reminded us of Christ - Emmanuel - “God with us.” She reminded us that Christ is with us in our hardships and in the difficulties in many of the churches represented by the delegates. She spoke of injustice, poverty, AIDS, hunger and a variety of other issues, and then reminded us that Christ alone gives us life and hope. It is because he is with us that we endure.
