Preparing to Pray 10/21/05

No longer will violence be heard in your land
nor ruin or destruction within your borders,
but you will call your walls Salvation
    and your gates Praise.
Your sun will never set again,
    and your moon will wane no more;
the LORD will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow will end.

-from Isaiah 60:18, 20, opening sentence to CICW service outline,  The Kingdom that Cannot Be Shaken

News Articles for Prayer This Week
In public intercessory prayer this week, we pray…

- for all those in the path of Hurricane Wilma

- for victims of the earthquake in Izmir, Turkey

- with gratitude for the ministry of Evangelical Haitian Church of the Nazarene, and other worshiping communities of Haitian immigrants

Themes for Prayer and Worship This Week

- The Kingdom that Cannot Be Shaken (Calvin Institute of Christian Worship)

- Paul’s Second Missionary Journey: Acts 17 (Calvin College Healthy Habits: Apostle Paul Pedometer Challenge)

This prayer is based on the devotional reading for Week 5(PDF) from the Healthy Habits site:

God, you are the one the world has been seeking all along. Our most revered idols are but “parodies” of your real rule. Only you can fill the God-shaped hole created in all human beings.  You, the real God, intervened in human history, as proven by Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. May we seek to worship you this week as the one true God in a world of numerous but idolatrous imitations.

Pondering the Purpose of Worship
In addition to our prayers in preparation for worship, we ponder the purpose of worship. This week, we reflect on these words of wisdom about worship as we gather.
