GC ‘06 Update 3

After morning worship, John Witvliet led a session on theological reflection on the meaning of worship. He presented the Vertical Habits initiative and said that it has the potential to be a central metaphor for worship that speaks to a variety of worship traditions.

Dr. Witvliet ended by noting that the word “praise” is a gritty, muscular word, and citing Walter Brueggemann, talked about praise as “an anti-idolatry campaign.” He presented this exercise from A More Profound Alleluia, with the text of the doxology and a possible internal monologue in parentheses. He suggested that worship renewal is partly a matter of moving from the first to the second, and even suggested that congregations consider printing this exercise in a church newsletter with the question, “How do we move from this ... to this?”
