Recent History 1

Report from the ”Recent History of Christian Worship” seminar:

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.” Ephesians 4:4-6

A seminar began today to explore the recent transformation of Christian worship. About 20 preachers, worship planners, and professors from numerous different denominations gathered to explore our personal concepts of church, discuss 5 major movements since Vatican II, and harvest from all the varied interests in the seminar profound yet practical theological observations that reminds us there is “one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.”

We began with an overview that recognizes the complexity of this discussion.  We acknowledged different attitudes toward history, determined four levels at which to discuss worship, and explored various definitions of worship.

The second half of our time together was spent on Vatican II.  Joyce Ann Zimmerman presented on the history leading up to Vatican II.  Beginning with the Council of Trent, she traced how Vatican II came out of a pastoral concern for the person in the pew.  She gave evidence of increased desire for participation, social justice, and vernacular practices in the early 20th century.  We concluded our time with a video about the origins of Vatican II that was sprinkled with testimonies of how this council changed the Church worldwide.
