Festival of Food and Faith
Festival of Food and Faith Overview
Saturday, October 27, 2007, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The church began as a meal fellowship. Jesus broke bread with disciples and shared table fellowship with social outcasts, and the first Christians practiced radical table hospitality in Jesus’ name. Today, the church still gathers for Eucharist (the Lord’s Supper), and many congregations also share other meals together and provide food for those who are hungry in their own neighborhoods and around the world. In a time of widespread concern about what we eat and how food is produced and distributed, might Christian practices of life at table hold untapped wisdom for those who seek to eat in ways that are good for them, for others and for Creation?
The Festival of Food and Faith will explore ways in which Christian faith can inform daily food practices theologically and sacramentally in regard to:
• the health of our bodies (nurture, nutrition)
• the access others have to food (hunger, justice, gluttony)
• the health of the earth, which our food choices influence (food production
and the environment)
• extending hospitality and enriching relationships
(feasting, sharing, comforting)
