Heroic Rebuilding at Hopewell
The congregation of Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Mount Olive, Miss., had been making great progress preparing for its church’s 175th anniversary—until Hurricane Katrina blew into the area on August 29.
The next day, a white coat of paint still gleamed in the sun. Flowers bloomed along the front porch. The cemetery still lay peacefully across the road, undisturbed. But the forested area surrounding the little church was littered with downed trees, their roots thrust skyward. One of the trees lay squarely on the church’s roof, where it had blasted out a gaping hole.
