Alphabet Soup
We were saying earlier this week after staff meeting that we need a guide to the abbreviations we bandy about around here. A first attempt:

AGO Service of Evensong
Last night the 2005 American Guild of Organists Regional Convention began at LaGrave Avenue Church, in a service of evensong co-sponsored by CICW. The Calvin Alumni Choir was magnificent as always, and the specially-commissioned setting of Psalm 63 by Emma Lou Diemer was intriguing and richly textured, but perhaps what struck me the most was the congregational hymn singing. The LaGrave walls shook as LaGrave members, AGO attendees, and other worshipers raised Sing Praise to the Lord, What Shall I Render To The Lord, and Love Divine, All Loves Excelling. The hymns will echo throughout my week.

GC Update 18
With the stirring singing of Amazing Grace, with Jimmie Abbingdon on the piano, the 2005 Colloquium concluded. Pray for safe travel for the 200+ people returning to their homes across North America, for the relationships begun and strengthened in the past three days, for the fruition of the ideas and insights shared, and for the deepening of worship across North America through the Holy Spirit.
See the Grants section of the CICW website in the coming weeks for more wrap-ups and resources from Colloquium.

Grants Colloquium Update 1
Betty met some of our early arrivals last night and reports:
Dinner last evening with participants who arrived early provided a snapshot of what these next days will bring. Gathered from New England and New Mexico, from Texas and Tennessee and from Hawaii and Pennsylvania, these grant recipients shared their passion for worship and their joys and fears regarding their projects for the renewal of worship. After two hours several expressed that they already had found new friends. Coming from many geographic locations, experiences and backgrounds, they found common interests that encouraged them.

Preaching Forgiveness, Acknowledging Lament
Reports from each session of last month’s Preaching Forgiveness Conference are now posted.
One memorable quote from LeRon Shults that I omitted from my report but wanted to salvage here, especially since it touched on a recurring theme of the conference, regarded the validity and importance of lament (emphasis added):
Biblical lament is raw authenticity with God about what life feels like. It is not just whining.
And since both Shults and colleague Steven Sandage discussed the importance of facial communication in forgiveness, I wanted to highlight this passage from Frederick Buechner, brought to my attention by Betsy Steele Halstead:

High School Worship Training ‘05
This past week, Calvin College’s Worship Apprentices and CICW hosted the second annual conference on High School Worship Training. Over 100 high school student worship leaders from around the country came to Calvin for the event.
At pizza dinner Monday night, I sat with the worship team from Lynden Christian HS in Lynden, Washington.
