Another Blog?

Another blog?  The Internet is inundated with blogs and bloggers so why yet another?  And does this blogger have the TIME to blog on this new site?  Both very good questions.

I’m not sure about the question of having time to blog--time will tell on that score.  Here’s a thought or two as to “Why yet another blog?” As parent relations director at Calvin College I engage in a lot of telephone and e-mail conversations each week.  Conversations with Calvin parents.  Conversations with Calvin staff and faculty members.  On occasion I find that the content of some of these conversations might be helpful to others.

The insights gleaned from such conversations might not be earth-shattering or worthy of a general annoucement in the Calvin-Parents e-newsletter or posting on the Parent Web site.  But I’m guessing that there might be an audience for a Blog whose topic concerns parenting a college student, or to be more specific, parenting a Calvin College student.  Such is the reason for beginning this new blog, “From My Window,” where I will attempt to share the content of some of my experiences and conversations with anyone who’s interested in visiting.

At this point I can’t promise how often entries will be made on this Blog.  I can promise that if I share the content of a conversation or scenario that the names will be omitted or changed, of course, to protect privacy.  I will also attempt to share issues, questions and conversations which are somewhat universal, perhaps helpful and maybe even interesting to others.

Or at least of interest to me.  :)

  1. I think that would be of interest. As the parent of a long-distance student who did not know anyone before she came there, my need for information is different than that of Grand Rapids family where the student has several friends attending and can go home for the weekend. So far, things are great and she loves Calvin (which I expected), but she is having so much fun socially, I think she isn’t sleeping alot. I am sure that this is typcial and she will adjust. She has always been able to handle school, work, and an active social life! We are grateful for Calvin and think that she will grow spiritually alot from the experience and gain the skills needed to have an influence in the world for the Kingdom. I can’t think of anywhere I would rather have her be!

  2. Parenting college students does present new challenges to parents.  There is the factor of long distance, of a newly acquired independence and for some college students, self-reliance.  Ensuring a good relationship during this time is very important.
