Settling Into a House
before i dive right into this blog entry, i want to say one thing: it’s late october, and i still haven’t seen any snow. wow! we’ve actually had some warm spells too, so i’m hoping that we’ll have a warm halloween. freezing cold takes the fun out of trick or treating, you know what i mean?
after returning from work and advising on the first day of academic advising, i spent the afternoon installing spotlights on the ceiling above our basement bar. we’ve got this sweet room in our basement with a working fireplace and bar, complete with a record player (records included) and surround sound. it’s our lounge and entertainment space, and its usually where we host guests. there’s nothing like roasting marshmallows over a roaring fire during a cold evening, with mozart (or elton john) playing in the background.
it’s been almost 5 months since i’ve moved in at the beginning of the summer, and my clothing is still in boxes. mind you, my clothes are organized in these boxes. one box contains clothes i rarely wear, and the other box contains clothes i wear every day. i’m still sleeping on a mattress without a bed frame, and i still haven’t bought a desk chair. the room i’m sharing with ian should be a single room, and we should have moved to another room in the house with much more space. but we haven’t yet. paintings that we’ve been meaning to put up in our bar lie propped against the back of a futon, disassembled and derelict. boxes line the walls of our garage, mashed together like overstocked halloween decorations on the shelves at Menards. and the largest room in the house looks depressingly empty with a lone sofa, a coffee table set, and a chili plant (it’s about to get emptier because i just sold the sofa). i guess 5 months isn’t enough time to completely move in yet.
on the other hand, we’ve already called this house home. after installing the spotlights above the bar, i realized that i was one step closer to completing my move in. ironically, this year’s sophomores will probably sign leases for next year before i finish moving in. but what’s the rush? i’m probably going to be here for 3 years, if not longer. grand rapids is a great city, and i’ve only explored tiny areas of the city, namely eastown, downtown, calvin college and the college’s surrounding neighborhood. there’s plenty more to see. moving in will have to wait.
