Rangeela

(almost) the entire int’l student body on stage

I think I saw the entire international student population at calvin today. I managed to grab a few photos with my blackberry, and I’m sorry that they’re not of the greatest quality. Until cell phones come with large glass lenses, photos will always look this terrible. But at least you get an idea of what I saw at rangeela!

this was my first rangeela.  when i mention that to people, i usually get a response somewhere along the lines of “WHAT?!” i guess i’m expected to be either performing or watching if i’m an international student.  sadly, that was never the case; usually something came up that pulled me away from the event.  either that, or the tickets sold out before i could get to them.  such was the case this year, but my next door blogging neighbor had extra tickets, so i got them from her.

The whole performance really brought me back a few years. Some of the performances reminded me of the ethnic dances I would see on hong kong television. Also, the way some acts integrated hip hop dancing into their routines was very reminiscent of music videos from asian pop stars.  In other words, they were quite authentic.

i went backstage during the intermission to help traang (a stage manager and friend) deliver some donuts to performers.  i’m always amazed by how much effort students put into these productions.  where do they find the time?  or do they just put aside homework for the sake of this performance?  either way, i was impressed by the caliber of the performances, and i’m sure calvin will milk this event for public relations.  i heard that calvin has a relatively high percentage of international students within its undergraduate student body.  in brochures, calvin makes an effort to boast its diversity, and you’ll see people of all colors featured on the website.  i don’t think this is a negative thing; on the contrary, i’m proud to be an international student at calvin college.  linda bosch, jo cooper, and rosemary etter from the admission staff are all motherly figures to us, and i’m ever grateful for their care and concern.  well done, rangeela!
