Raising the Bar on Sundays

i think our house is beginning to develop a pattern for sundays.  again, we had a house lunch, and again, we also had a house dinner.  but for dinner this time, my housemates stepped everything up a notch.  we had a total of 12 people at dinner (ian and matt invited 8 guests), so many that our dinner table couldn’t hold everyone.  we found our makeshift solution in the garage.  it took the combined strength of my 3 housemates to haul our ping pong table downstairs into our empty basement room.

lunch was fun.

matt and ian had already been preparing for the dinner since saturday.  the main challenge was finding recipes that were gluten-free, since one of our friends was allergic to gluten (which is almost in everything).  so after planning out the courses, they went grocery shopping and spent the rest of saturday night washing and chopping vegetables.  josh and i helped out with some general house cleaning, so by the end of saturday, the dinner had become a house event.  of course, matt and ian did most of the work, but josh and worked hard to test out the dessert.  i think we deserve some credit for helping out.

midway through sunday afternoon, our guests began arriving.  kaitlyn (matt’s sister) and caitlin arrived, then zach, sunny, and their baby girl daniela (i hope i spelled that right), then mary-margaret, and lastly mike.  nathan and jill had stayed to study at our house after mars hill, so they were already here.

and the food!  oh the marvelous mounds of edibles filled our plates.  i badly overestimated the rice, and we only ate a third of what we made.  the other leftovers weren’t as bountiful, but our fridge was bursting after dinner.  i think matt and ian made a four-course dinner, with dessert.  we had vegetable stir fry with chicken, a carrot stew, green beans, cream of broccoli soup, and biscuits.  i ate as much as i could, considering that we had lunch only 3 hours before.

it’s friday as i write this, and sunday’s rolling up again.  i guess i’d better start preparing something soon!  until next time…
