I Heart Sundays
(L-R) ian, matt, kendra, jill, me, josh
we had our first house dinner (with the two lady guests), and we didn’t even know it. in fact, we had two meals in a row, lunch and dinner. maybe we were trying to make up for the previous months where we never had a house dinner. all of this was part of an amazing sunday, a sunday that was even better than most other sundays (and sundays are always a great time for me).
the day started off pretty routine. some calvin house church members and friends gathered at my house for the carpool, and then we headed off to the 11am service. there we met jill, who had arrived earlier after picking up 3 calvin students on campus interested in checking out the church. she had saved 5 seats for us, and we all crammed in for the service. i was pleasantly surprised to see a big tuba poking out above the crowd when i entered the building. mars hill occasionally has these “horn sundays,” where any brass players in the congregation can join the worship team. the area behind the worship band was filled with brass instruments, including the big tuba i’d saw. the previous week, the worship leader had invited all brass players in the congregation to pick up some sheet music so they could prepare for this week’s service. i never expected pieces of metal to be so worshipful.
after the service, we piled into larger pieces of metal attached to wheels and headed back to my house for the afterparty. but it wasn’t a bad kind of afterparty; it was a jesus afterparty. have u noticed that jesus is pretty much the answer to everything? it even works for religion 309, a class i’m in called biblical theology. the prof was asking some deep question about the reading, and i brazenly put my hand up:
prof: “yes, nehemiah?”
me: “i think it has something to do with jesus.”
we all laughed, even the prof. most of us in the class were religion majors too, so i like to think that we have a pretty developed/elite sense of humor.
so anyway, back to the afterparty. we got home and started getting lunch ready. a few days ago i went grocery shopping and bought a load of pizza stuff: pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, green peppers, mushrooms, ham, pineapple, sauce, and of course, premade pizza crusts. i wish i could spin out pizza dough and toss it in the air, but i’m afraid it’ll just fall on my dreads and get stuck. then i’d need to cut my dreads off. or i could walk around with pizza dough rotting in my dreads. that’s a pleasant thought…
we had homemade pizza for lunch, and that was our first house meal. fireworks exploded outside our window and the trees in our backyard sang “Handels Messiah” in unison.
after lunch, we buckled down for homework. two of my friends, cathryn and megan, came over to join us for our study party, and we had a group of people studying in the study room, another group on our dining table, and another group in the basement bar/lounge. i’m glad i went to the basement, because the group in the study room might’ve distracted me. i learned later that their “studies” consisted of generous doses of zelda running on an emulator on josh’s laptop. i have no idea how that links to physics and engineering.
as the afternoon sped by (homework really makes time fly. not.) some people left for home. cathryn and megan left for the dorms, and nate headed back home to escape from zelda. jill and kendra stayed to continue hacking away at some science subject. i decided to take a study break and whipped together a quick dinner. pretty simple stuff: spaghetti, garlic bread, and broccoli with lemony bread crumbs, hydrated by exotic tap water from the grand rapids water system. and that was our second house dinner.
after dinner, the girls made cookies, and we had cookies and ice cream for dessert. at that point, i was pretty stuffed and ready for bed (kinda like the feeling i get in my world religions class, which is right after lunch), but i still had homework to hack at. so we all returned to homework until i went to bed. then i have no idea what happened because i was fast asleep while jill, kenda, josh, matt, and ian continued at homework. or maybe they were playing zelda.
