Dance Guild
everyone involved with dance guild
I never knew that one of calvin’s student organizations had around 300 members. Dance guild is an organization for students interested in dance, whether ballet, tap, lyrical, or hip hop. each style also has a beginner, intermediate, and advanced group so people can dive right in and begin performing. each semester, they put on a showcase at the FAC featuring their various dance groups, and this semester I managed to make time and see the show. Some of my friends were performing, so I wanted to cheer them on. Besides, one of them had been nagging me to buy tickets since last semester. How can I reject such dedication?

The FAC was packed. I went with some of my housemates and for the first half of the show I had to stand at one corner of the balcony so I could see the entire stage. In the second half, we snuck over to the back of the balcony where seats were reserved for dance guild performers. We had some friends sitting back there, so we just invited ourselves over. At least we could see the stage without having to stand.
the stage can get pretty crowded at times

i think this was a lyrical… i could be wrong
being dance-illiterate, I kind of expected hip hop dance after hip hop dance. however, I was surprised to see a nice diversity of performances. the highlight for me was an act incorporating brooms and tap dancing. drumming and tap seem to have a lot in common! I couldn’t help but wonder what a collaboration between tap dancers, a drummer, and a dj would look like. one of my friends will be part of the leadership committee for dance guild next year. maybe I could ask him to hook me up. that would be really fun, except for the fact that we’re currently having a shortage of DJs. if any readers out there are prospective student and DJs, you should come to Calvin and find me.
