Celebration of the Grand: Rained Out!
i’ve been looking forward to this event since the school year started. first, it’s our first floor date with our sister floor. second, i actually get to see people in grand rapids downtown, and third, i get to introduce my hong kong buddies to downtown grand rapids. so i take the day off work and head over a couple hours early, only to witness the event getting rained out before the fireworks even begin. around an hour before the fireworks were scheduled to go off, we hear thunder, and soon after, torrents of rain pours down on us.
if you look at the first picture, the picture before the rain, you can see that the road is fairly crowded. by the time rain came down, the entire road was filled with people. so there’s all these people, all walking/jogging/running/sprinting for shelter, and there isn’t a lot of space on the road. luckily, i didn’t see anyone get hurt, and the grand rapids police was there to direct traffic. when the rain started pouring down, my main concern was finding luke and jeff. i was with daniel, but we needed to find luke and jeff because we all carpooled in luke’s car. we couldn’t find jeff, and as we were looking and heading back to the parking lot, i also lost track of daniel. i was really concerned because it was daniel and jeff’s first time in downtown grand rapids, and they probably didn’t know their way around too well. luckily, daniel gave me a call and told me he was at the carpark, and soon after jeff also gave me a call and told me he was returning to the dorms in phil’s (our RA) car. so i had to run back in the rain to the carpark, with my jacket covering my camera and tripod, all the while not really knowing where the carpark was. i vaguely remembered the general direction, and i was lucky to run right into it; daniel and luke were standing in the entrance and flagged me down.
calvin students everywhere!
although it was a bit disappointing to see the event rained out, the evening seemed more memorable because of the rain. last year’s celebration of the grand was pretty neat, but i was a bit disappointed by the fireworks. then again, the atmosphere was fantastic, and i think it more than made up for the fireworks. this year, i can laugh over the rain and the chaos which ensued. nevertheless, the evening ended on a good note as we ordered some pizza from papa johns (the works, yum yum) and hung out with some new friends from other dorms. oh yeah, and speaking of papa johns, i heard that last year they received an average of 500 orders PER EVENING from the calvin campus. pretty crazy, eh?
