Ada Vision Center
i had a dilemma: the plastic frame of my eyeglasses broke around the lens, so the frame would no longer hold the lens in. i tried superglue, but to no avail. i tried searching for the frames online, but the only store selling them was located in germany, and they didn’t reply to my emails. i was told by a local optometrist that the frames were no longer being sold, and that the American Esprit warehouse was out of stock. so i was at a dead end.
since my lenses were really nice (those funky transition lenses) and my prescription was the same, i decided to look into buying new frames for my old lenses. i’d heard that some optometrists will recut old lenses to fit new frames. after visiting a few optometrists with no luck (they wouldn’t cut the lenses for me), i remembered that my friend’s dad was an optometrist in ada, and he owned his own store (ada vision center). i called up my friend, katie, and she so happened to be picking up new glasses that week. so i went with her to Ada Vision and the optometrist there, dr. reyburn, agreed to cut my lenses for me. i picked out a frame, handed over my lenses, and awaited their phone call. shortly afterwards, i was told that i could come in and pick up my glasses.
alas, when i arrived at the store and tried on the glasses, i noticed a weird smudge on the left lens. after cleaning it repeatedly with a cloth, the smudge still wouldn’t go away. i notified the clerk, who took a close look and told me some bad news. the lens had been heat damaged by the lenscutter, and because my purchase was a special case (dr. reyburn had pulled some strings), the damage wasn’t covered by any warranty. the clerk suggested that i contact my optometrist in hong kong, because transition lenses sometimes have warranties for 2 years. my lenses were a little over a year old, so if i had a warranty, there was a good chance i could claim a new pair.
so i left the store empty-handed and contacted my optometrist. i was told that my lenses had no warranty. poopie…what now? i threw ideas around in my head for a week, to no avail. i was stuck, so i decided to call Ada Vision and ask them for advice. maybe they’d have some ideas for me.
i just got off the phone with the clerk, and he told me that dr. reyburn had ordered a new set of lenses for me. i had never mentioned anything to katie about my lenses having no warranty, nor had i told anyone at the store about my dilemma. dr. reyburn had just ordered me a new set of lenses that probably cost just as much as the frame. wow… miracles happen.
oh yeah, the reason why the lenses cost as much, if not more, than the frames is because dr. reyburn gave me a HUGE discount on my frames. i’d found the same frame selling online for $100 cheaper, and not only did he match the price of the online store, but he cut the price further because i was a calvin student.
