5 Years Later, Nehemiah Skateboards Again!
manual to 5-set ollie, courtesy of matt
the last time i really went skateboarding was… maybe 5 years ago? jeff and i headed out with brian, a high schooler, to the local skatepark. i’d never skated in a skatepark before, and i wasn’t really up for it with a bruised tailbone from snowboarding the week before. it didn’t really matter though; i had so much fun shooting photos and filming, it was ridiculous. the kids there could really pull off some of the gnarliest tricks. yes, gnarly. oh yeah, did i mention that they were all a lot younger than us? one kid, teddy, was only 14, and he’d already skated for 4 years. another, matt, looked like he was the same age, and had skated for 9 years. so jeff and i signed up, rented a helmet (which was so nasty from sweat that i bought a skullcap to wear under it), and hit the park.

Interim: Developing the Christian Mind (DCM)
one class. three weeks. it’s a great way to learn! when I can focus on only one class and put my best into it, I enjoy learning a lot more. I’m taking DCM right now (Developing the Christian Mind), and usually freshman students take it. I’m a sophomore, so many people ask me what I’m doing in DCM. it’s because I took music theory for my first interim, which opened up a lot of opportunities for me since music theory was the prerequisite for calvin’s music classes. I’m glad I took it, and my professor was the associate conductor of the grand rapids symphony, John Varineau. fantastic teacher, and now my suitemate is taking the same class for his first interim.

Finals Week
ah, i just handed in my last assignment for the semester. now it’s just easy crusing until final exams. i have only two exams for my four courses; statistics and religion. religion’s my hardest class by far, so i’ll be allocating tons of time towards that. actually, it’s not that hard. it’s just a lot of information i need to retain. the class is called history of christian theology, and it tracks theological developments from the first disciples to thomas aquinas in the late middle ages. that’s a lot of time to cover, and a lot of theology. needless to say, i’m a bit concerned, especially since i’m not the greatest at memorization, so i’ll need to spread my review over the next two weeks. i’m glad the exam is next thursday.

video: Beets-Veenstra Service Auction
![]()
all for the children, all for them…
lots of money, stupidity, and fun. each year dorms raise funds for their service partners. my dorm is partnered with horizons, an organization that helps special-needs kids. the service auction features services that dorm residents put up for sale, and other residents bid for them. for instance, my suitemates and i offered a private concert, which was bought for something like $35. i also got a steal, buying sewing repair (including alterations) for a year for only $20! that’s cheaper than altering shirts at the tailor’s. as the dorm raises more and more money, dorm leadership needs to accomplish certain tasks. for instance, every few hundred dollars, some resident assistants and the resident director eats a goldfish. a live one. every resident who buys a service for more than $50 gets a cream pie to throw at a dorm leader of their choice. sounds crazy, i know, but at the end, it’s really “all for the children.” last year our dorm raised the most money on the entire campus and established a calvin record at over $3000. how much money did we raise this year? watch the vid!
oh yeah, props to cory, our barnabas leader, for attempting to drink an entire gallon of milk before puking. yeah, he did end up puking… for the children!

25 Hour Film Festival
write, act, shoot, and edit: all in 25 hours. that’s a formula for chaos at the 25 hour film festival. calvin’s video network (CVN) hosts two of them each year, and each year it gets more and more popular. the festival kicked off before academic advising recess, giving us a holiday to work on. we were given a theme, a line, and a prop which we had to include in the film. there was also a 5-minute time limit, which made it even more challenging.

Coming Soon: Dorm Retreat Video
![]()
zoolander = lots of fun
i think it was hailing when i got there. weird weather kind of took out the outdoor element, which was disappointing because i wanted to play some basketball, but i still loved hanging out with friends and meeting new people from the dorm. it’s been a while since i could relax and forget about schoolwork and it was also nice having the opportunity to meet new people and play with some toys. i borrowed jeff’s video camera and caught some footage, and i also had my drumkit there because my band led worship. plus there was the brand new dorm sound system, which i took advantage of right away. DJing’s kinda fun, and turntables aren’t always necessary. photography was tricky, but i got some cool shots. but i don’t want to reveal too much, because i want to make you all wait for the retreat video. my video team and i are working on editing the footage we took, so just hold your horses, and in a little bit we’ll have the Beets-Veenstra Dorm Retreat 2006 Video!

video: My Favorite Pets

i was thinking, when i need to move out of the dorms next year (juniors are expected to move out), i’d want three pets: (1) a golden retriever puppy, (2) a german shepherd puppy, and (3) a bunny! now, the bunny seems a bit left out, and sometimes i wonder if it’ll get eaten by the dogs, but i always imagine that the dogs and the bunny will play with each other and get along really well. a friend told me that they dogs and bunny need to grow up together, because then they’ll be friends and get along. i hope that’s true, because i really really love bunnies. i don’t know why… maybe it’s because i was born in the rabbit year of the chinese calendar.

video: Hot Seat, 3rd Beets Edition

the featured member of 3rd beets
we have this tradition on our floor where once a week, we get to “interrogate” one member on our floor (3rd beets) and ask them any questions we want. it’s called the hot seat, and it’s an opportunity learn something new about people on our floor. it’s all part of the community experience, yet sometimes we have some very odd, and i mean very odd, happenings. watch the video, and you’ll see what i mean.
