2006-2007 Wrap Up
i’m going to be a junior. i’m going to leave teenage-hood and hit 20. another year of landmarks for my life, how about that!
finals ended with a bang, as i was packing until the minute i left for the airport at 4:30am. i was flying to hong kong (home) for the first time in 1.5 years, and i stayed up all night to combat inevitable jetlag. at the moment, i’m back in a regular sleeping cycle, but for several days i was reeaaally out of it. that’s what happens when hong kong is exactly 12 hours different from grand rapids. so 11:30pm in grand rapids (my normal bedtime) is 11:30am in hong kong. nice!
i had 4 final exams, one which was a take-home essay. the 3 remaining tests were economics and two religion tests. then i also had a group paper due for a communications class, advertising and public relations. what in the world is a group paper anyway? that might have been my trickiest project in college so far. i was studying for finals and doing finals until the night before i flew, and i didn’t really have time to pack until 4 hours before i left for the airport. so i was really rushed, trying to say goodbyes (which are always difficult) and pack simultaneously. in the end, i didn’t completely finish packing, and i had to leave some packing to my roommate. sorry ian!
the 20+ hour flight wasn’t too bad. i had picked decent seats, so i had legroom, and i managed to fall asleep on the plane. sleeping while traveling is always tricky for me, so i was really grateful that i hadn’t slept the night before. when i was awake, i was reading shane claiborne’s The Irresistible Revolution, which was slowly changing my life as the flight continued. the book was so captivating that i never even took out my laptop once on the flight, and for those who know me, that’s pretty remarkable.
my roommate and i recently committed to leading a Mars Hill house church for the Calvin neighborhood, which means we’re responsible for bringing Calvin College Mars Hill church attendees together and discovering what we should do as the body of Christ. i know it’ll be an exciting time, and i’m anxious to begin once i return to grand rapids on june 2. at the same time, i don’t know what to expect. reading shane clairborne’s book really inspired me, and it gave me some direction on what Christians should do today.
so now i’m sitting at home in hong kong, with a pile of childhood playthings beside me, which i am trying to give away. i hope my toys will bring the same joy i had to some kids in hong kong. i better make some calls now. until next time!
