week two

Do weekends mess with anyone else after coming back to school? Confusing question. But after a long break (say, summer?), and then the start of a new semester, I get thrown off by Friday. Isn’t it time for another three months off?

(Please oh please tell me if this rings true for you! I feel like such a slacker.) But this weekend flew by, and it’s already Tuesday. Next weekend will be here soon…

Not that I’m living from weekend to weekend…

Though I did have fun over this past one. After a long day of studying (well, not so long. I definitely went to Meijer with Amanda for an hour or so), Amanda, Laura, and I went to see The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Saturday night. One thing I will definitely miss after graduation: free movies in the Fine Arts Center.

If you haven’t seen a movie in an auditorium full of college students, you really don’t know what you’re missing. It’s spoiled me for the true theater experience (you know… the one where you pay seven dollars). First off, it’s free. (At least it is here.)

But the best part is how relaxed it is. Seriously. We laugh together, we… (I was going to say cry, but that’s not true) laugh harder together. No one really shushes anyone—even after we all have fake coughing fits during the opening credits—and whispering isn’t so strictly forbidden. And sometimes… if you run in the right circles… you can use the free-movie experience as a chance to throw a huge theme party.

Yes, my sophomore year, I co-hosted a huge Pirates of the Caribbean party. We wore costumes, we made food, we gave away prizes, we even sang a song. And an hour before the show played in the Fine Arts Center, we stomped on over pirate-style to get the best seats. It was such a great time. Of course, not everyone understands why you really have to dress like a pirate to see the movie… but then, they weren’t invited.

So I was half-expecting to see a group of students coming with towels to Hitchhiker’s Guide, but if they were there, I missed them. (If that doesn’t make sense, read the book. Or, hey, see the movie.) Anyway, the girls and I had a fun time. (Crazy movie, though.)

Sunday was a lazy day, and Kim and I went to see a community production of Beauty and the Beast. So that was fun too, although I had “Be Our Guest” stuck in my head all day on Monday.

No huge plans for next weekend, which is fair enough. Between my lit classes, my writing class, and my thesis, I think it will be a perfect time to catch up on reading! (Poor Moll Flanders is almost done…) —jl
