very merry

I just finished a cup of blackberry sage tea, and I’m listening to the soundtrack for the new Pride and Prejudice movie… being home is beautiful. I’ve been spending a lot of time with my mum and younger sister, usually reminiscing or laughing our heads off. There are worse ways to spend long afternoons…

The semester finished well, I think. At least, it finished. I was having so much fun that I forgot exams were involved, but I don’t think I disgraced myself with oceanography. We’ll see. (I think the plankton got the best of me on a few questions, though. Grades are posted in two days, so I’ll know then.) But it was such a great last week with my apartment girls. They’re so wonderful—I miss laughing with them every evening. Wish I could carry them around in my pockets…

But I have been able to see Karen, my wonderful Calvin friend who is now in St. Louis. She came over two days ago for an afternoon of chai and chatting, and we talked for hours. So great to talk with her and hear what she’s been up to.

Oh, and I’ve been catching up on fun-reading (as opposed to school-reading, though some of that’s fun). I raided my parents’ bookshelves, unable to decide between The Rule of Four, A Gentleman of Leisure (I’m a huge Wodehouse fan), Life of Pi (which everyone has been talking about), The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (ah, Bronte), and Gilead (Robinson is coming to Calvin this spring). Then I went to the library to grab a book (which I promised my roommates I’d read), and I came back with four tag-alongs. Hmm. Ten books in two weeks is pushing it, even for me.

Plus, I need to start baking. Don’t molasses sugar cookies sound good? And my sister and I have been talking about gingerbread… we were browsing through a gorgeous cooking supply store today, all their dipping oils and holiday displays. Sigh. I love this time of year.

I’m missing the Michigan snow, though. Our ground is prickly brown with dead grass… not a flake in sight. Feels less festive. I miss choking on snow while walking to class, peeling icy cold socks off my feet when I get back to the room, the shrieks of the little kids (well, and college students) sledding on the hill behind Phi-Chi, and the mauve glow of the sky at midnight.

Still, it’s hard to beat being home. My older sister gets in Saturday night, and we’ll all be together for a few days. Opening presents, going to our favorite candlelight service, playing all the Christmas CDs…

I might not post for a little while, so merry, merry Christmas, wherever this finds you.—jl
