the wedding album, part two

I wish you all the joy that you can wish.—Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

Wedding stories continued…

6. The cakes. Here’s an unabashed plug for the wedding cakes (they had three): Each one tasted eyes-closed heavenly. No Styrofoam-dry cakes at this reception! The guests I polled raved about them, just as we had been raving for months… The bakers at La Bonne Bouchée and The Cakery are geniuses. If you are near Saint Louis, go check them out. Try the Four Flavor Cake and the Strawberry Black Forest at La Bonne Bouchée, and get the Confetti Cupcakes from The Cupcakery (run by the same folks as The Cakery). They are sublime, and I promise you’ll love them.

7. The Marx Brothers shout-out. I loved watching the father-daughter dance. Adrienne and Dad looked so great together on the dance floor, but best of all was the music she chose: “You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me,” sung by Frank Sinatra. A nice song, sure, but it was hilarious for us, because my sisters and I were raised on the Marx Brothers movies. And in one of them (Monkey Business, I think), that song has a great role. So, instead of a second chance at bawling, I was grinning, watching two people who love to laugh together as they danced. … And I couldn’t help laughing more when I saw one of my uncles stand off to the side, doing a fantastically funny (and perfect!) Harpo Marx impression at the same time. I love family!

awww… adrienne and jon

8. Pain! To those who haven’t experienced bridesmaiddom before: the next morning, you will feel like you’d stepped in front of a truck—aching from scalp (those hundred hair pins!) to soles (those darn shoes!).

9. Connections. One of my favorite after-wedding stories: I heard that my eight-year-old cousin found Jon’s mom the next morning at the hotel, recognized her, and then told her how well she’d danced with Jon at the reception. I love watching the two families mix!

10. Pie. I do love cake, but what do you do with all that leftover reception fruit?

yeah. blueberry.

... and strawberry.

There it is: the motivation to get back on my running schedule. That, and the freezer full of cake…—jl
