the swing of things (welcome to march)
Things are starting to get a little more hectic… longer editing assignments, more readings for class, a lab project, and spring break around the corner. Spring semester is starting to feel a little less “new.”
So, I went to Rangeela for the first time last Friday, and I was absolutely blown away (and kicking myself for missing it freshman year. Last year I was an ocean away, so don’t blame me for that one). It’s amazing how talented and diverse and proud the Calvin community is.
It’s hard to pick favorite acts, but the top five would include…
1. African Acapella—these men were so talented, and their voices were gorgeous.
2. Tae Kwon Do Act—I’ve never seen people punch through wood before. It was impressive!
3. French Cooking—a student from France taught us all how to make a potato/celery/endive salad and handed out samples to a few lucky people.
4. South African Gumboot Dance—these dancers were so much fun to watch because they were having a blast, dancing and stomping and making noise in their Wellington boots.
5. Indian Skit—one of my dearest friends was playing a chai vendor, and the dialogue throughout this one was hysterical…
Anyway, that doesn’t nearly do the night justice, but it really was incredible. I came back to my apartment, wanting to grab my passport and debit cards and hit the airport. One year ago exactly I was in Palermo Sicily, and the travel bug has bitten again… Rangeela just fueled it. A lot.
One presenter said in the opening prayer that she thanked God that he created more than one culture, more than one language, more than one people. I had never heard it expressed that way, but it’s so true. Watching the passion from these students and their nations… it’s so hard to put into words.
But Saturday found me at my desk, not the airport, Customs, baggage claim, and Bombay. Hmm. Nope, no sun, no beach, but this:

Not quite paradise, but close…
I spent all day trying very hard to be productive, but my mind and energy fought me until 10 p.m., when I finally caved and joined my roomies for a movie… and suddenly I had an energy surge and could have taken on the world, but all my books were closed for the night. That’s my rebellious and crazy brain. Anyway, the movie (The Forgotten, if you want to know) was pretty wild. I jumped out of my skin about eight times. Maybe nine.
Spring break is coming, which is great. My head needs a bit of a rest, I think. Oh, and today I get to call a few kids for our sociology phone survey (how lucky am I!), to ask them how they chose their majors. Otherwise, it’s a pretty typical week ahead. Tons of snow outside, which has killed my spring dreams for a while. But it is beautiful…
