ten for today
“Let’s thank God!” Indeed, it was pray—or bust wide open.—Jan Karon
In no particular order, and of no deep spiritual significance (sorry), some things I’m thankful for…
1. Pie. Oh my goodness, is there a finer dessert? We have three in our kitchen right now, and there’s still flour under my fingernails. Apple, pecan, and pumpkin, hooray for glorious autumn!
2. Okay, here it is, I’ll say it: good food. Really. On a day like Thanksgiving, it’s impossible to forget how good it is to eat well.
3. Cold weather. Though my older sister can never forgive me for loving it, bring it on, baby. I love the crisp energy of cooler air, I love it when my cheeks are cold, I love the excuse for wearing scarves and leg warmers and mittens. Which reminds me…
4. The soothing habit of knitting. Yes. Two sticks, a ball of yarn, and everything’s possible (not to mention warmer).
5. The availability of good books!! That we can read them, buy them, inter-library-loan them (yes, I really did just make that a verb), and for heaven’s sake, write them.
6. Winter sunsets. I can’t afford fine art, but with a view of the west, I don’t really need to.
7. It may be shallow, but after this month, I can’t quite manage to care: I am so grateful for the loveliness that is coffee. Yum. Hoist your mugs with me.
8. Good conversation. It makes me better than I am.
9. My dear and wonderful friends! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I am firmly convinced that the people I know will change the world. They do such amazing things! And travel so much that I’m half-sick with envy, but love them anyway! I’m glad that they’re safe and well, though most of them live far from here, and I miss them terribly…
10. For the safety and the health of my family. It’s been another crazy year. Wow. Truly an understatement. But despite all the traveling, illnesses, near-misses, and huge life changes, here we all are. And I am blessed and blessed, to have so much support and such true and dear people in my family.
Well there it is. If I go on any further, I’ll lapse into clichés that you’ve all heard so many times before. So I won’t.
Digest carefully, everyone. Give my regards to the cranberry sauce. And have yourself a happy thanksgiving.—jl
