spring fever

So it’s absolutely gorgeous outside, and all I really want to do is sit on our balcony and watch the trees bud. Instead, I’ve been bringing my homework for poetry class or for sociology out there with me. It’s a bit of a compromise, but I sneak furtive glances at the trees, I still feel the breeze, and the homework gets done after all.

The two huge piles of snow that have sat at the edge of the Knollcrest East parking lot are slowly shrinking. They’re much smaller now, and I think it will truly truly be spring with no setbacks once they are finally gone. And as I wait for that momentous day, I’ve been leaving our back door open—screen and all, which must drive my roommates nuts—to let the breeze (and probably legions of bugs) in.

I’ve been telling people that England last year spoiled me entirely for winter. So now I’m telling you. And it’s true. The daffodils bloomed in February or so—something crazy like that.

This year, then, I feel like spring is long overdue. It’s a relief to see the thick green blades coming out of the flowerbeds by Johnny’s and the bookstore. I’m excited for tulips… [I never saw that many tulips before I came to Calvin. Guess it makes sense: the whole Dutch heritage thing. You have to have tulips.]

Well, to help celebrate spring, a few friends and I got together Friday night, which was awesome. Sarah and Laura (my suitemates from freshman year) made an unbelievable Italian feast and a devastatingly chocolate cake (with dark fudge frosting, I am not kidding). Maria and I ate in amazement, and then we all watched The Last Samurai, which wasn’t really part of the theme, but it was still great.

I’ve been planning out my last batch of essays and projects, and somehow it’s starting to sink in that the year is almost over. My sociology prof, Kevin, said yesterday, “We are starting our final section in this class,” and I scanned the room to see if anyone else looked as surprised as I felt. How can we possibly be nearly done when I’ve only just gotten my schedule memorized??—jl
