late-weekend musings

Yes, the list is sitting on my desk. No… it’s not even halfway done. But that’s all right. I can catch up on homework over Academic Advising—though I can’t believe it’s time for that again!! I really don’t want to admit that the semester is half over (seriously??), or that I need to think about my last semester of classes at Calvin.

So, the reason that my infamous weekend list isn’t done? (Besides the obvious answer: the lists are always impossible to finish… that’s the point…) My wonderful suitemates (from freshman year) came to visit! I hadn’t really seen them since May, so it was a good excuse to set the list, the papers, the readings aside and have a blast. (Oh, and eat a lot. There is always food involved.)

Laura and Sarah came just before lunchtime on Friday, and after some catching up and touring our apartment, we went for lunch at Panera (I introduced them to the house latte—yum). I got to see pictures of Sarah’s sister’s wedding, and heard about their plans for traveling to Africa and Honduras next year. (Makes my Grand Rapids plans sound a little tame…) They are such amazing girls—so ready to see new places, experience new things.

We wandered through Barnes&Noble for a while… smelling leather journals (always a good habit), leafing through discount piles and glossy coffeetable books. (I found one on monasteries… sure enough, Rievaulx Abbey—which we visited while in York, England—had a few pages devoted to it.) Then we came back to Calvin and walked around so they could see the fall colors. Also stepped into Johnny’s so they could see how much better it looks now (renovations were a good idea… and it looks fabulous) and to swipe some coffee from the Fish House.

We came back and relaxed at the apartment before meeting up with Jen, another excellent friend, and going to Taste of India nearby. Oh my word. They didn’t have a dinner buffet, so we ordered a lot and swapped samples. A lot.  Unbelievable food. Unbelievably full afterwards. (I think my lungs kind of had to move… breathing was different. Ha ha ha.) Whew! But so much fun. We love, love, love Indian food.

Had to go to a movie so we could digest. (Right?) So caught a chick flick (Just Like Heaven) before they dropped me off at my place. This morning we all went to Church of the Servant nearby, and I realized that this was the first time all four of us went to church together. It was really neat to share hymnals and receive Communion together. After another wonderful lunch, the girls left for home… with promises to be back in a month.

Now everything feels quiet and ordinary again… and the list of work awaits. Mm, and laundry. Lots of laundry. Dishwashing. It’s a good week to play catch-up, though. Tuesday and Wednesday are cleared for advising, so I’ll finish my work then. In and around movie outings with friends… naturally.—jl
