keeping warm

Do you get tired of countdowns? I don’t. Two weeks left. And actually, in a kind of backwards way, finals week is one of the best parts of the semester. Sure, there’s the stress of tests and last major grades… but in between study sessions, I always manage to squeeze in a lot of lounging and fun. It balances out somehow.

But finals are next week, so this week I have two papers to finish, a book to read, oceanography reading to catch up… (oops)

My weekend wasn’t quite as (academically) productive as it should have been. But I had so much fun—spent a lot of quality time with friends. Friday night was an impromptu apartment-dinner-and-dessert-out night, to that new noodle place. The conversation carried back to the apartment, and I think I wound up chatting with the girls for four hours. So worthwhile—two of our ladies will be leaving soon. One to Spain; the other to Washington DC, both with semester abroad programs. They are both such amazing girls, and while I can’t begrudge them the semester abroad (especially after loving England two springs ago), I’ll miss them so much next semester. Quality time this weekend was a must.

Saturday saw the end of (almost) all of my Christmas shopping. Amanda and I spent a while at the mall, marathon shopping (for me anyway—I’m not a supershopper by nature). Then a little, little bit of work on my weight training take home final, and a movie night at the apartment I lived in last year.

Sunday afternoon I finished The Waves, by Virginia Woolf. I liked it better by the end—I think her style grew on me, or the characters’ thoughts became easier to understand. Then I saw Pride and Prejudice with part of my British novel class and two of my apartment-mates. Wow. I loved it. All I can say is: it was sure hard to concentrate the rest of the day. My poor gym final. It took me at least three times as long as it should have to finish it… all those daydreams kept interfering. Ah well. It’s done now.

And all weekend, we kept getting snow, and snow, and snow. Beautiful huge flakes that look like they’d taste sweet.

Lastly? The good news. I did just fine on my honors thesis (relief!!!!) and it looks like I probably have a placement for an internship this spring. More relief! It will be with a publishing company here in Grand Rapids, doing proofreading work, I think. I’ll have an interview soon and will find out more then. But—wow. I’ve only wanted to work in a publishing house for, what, five years now? So I’m excited and terrified to see what that will be like.

So much to think about! And I keep getting information about graduation… uh oh…—jl
