in the year of the BA: day 16

Welcome to my first post as a graduate! I feel ... no different. Kind of like after a birthday, when you’ve just turned seven, and all your relatives are asking: Don’t you feel so old now? And you think real hard and realize: no, not even a little bit. It’s like that. I think that I’m still expecting to go back to school at the beginning of September. It’s so hard to realize that I’m done, as in: done. But I am, and I have my—er—diploma cover to prove it! (I think they’re mailing the diplomas soon… probably after I pay my print services bill, eh?)

So, to celebrate the completion of four years of academic study, the first big thing I did after coming home was: get my wisdom teeth out! Yes, surgery sounded like fun, and honestly, what better way to kick off the summer? I took the plunge last Wednesday. The swelling’s nearly gone by now, though, and I’m back to mostly normal foods.

In all seriousness, I’ve had fun setting up my computer and desk area. We joke that I have the “corner office” here—the back bedroom. I’ve been shuffling through writing magazines and working on writing exercises (I wrote over 7000 words last week despite the surgery, so that’s a decent start). I’m trying to get into a routine, which has been patchy at best between icing my puffy cheeks last week and getting ready for a trip this week. Mom and I leave tomorrow morning for the Write-to-Publish conference at Wheaton College—we’ll be there for the rest of the week. I’m excited to learn more, especially in a four-morning class on literary fiction. That’ll help ease my lecture withdrawal, hmm?—jl
