i’m sick, how are you?
Why do I always get sick during vacations? Here I am, two weeks into summer, and sick with a cold. (Such an un-summery sickness, too.) All my precious unpacking-and-sorting energy is redirected to battling whatever is attacking my throat and nose… and all my boxes from the apartment are collecting dust in the dining room.
Earlier this week (pre-raging sore throat), I worked on getting a schedule down. How on earth do you organize huge chunks of time in order to get things done? At school it’s easy: go to class when you have to. Do homework when you’re not at class. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. (Okay, maybe not easy, because there’s still plenty of room to mess that up… but easier.)
But here… I’m working on writing, as promised. That right there is a major organization challenge: first of all, what does that even mean? At school I had all these romantic, artsy ideas of scribbling brilliant pages in the corner of my room. Not even close to reality.
This week has looked a bit different from that dream, in part because my parents bought me a computer. Huge surprise! I definitely didn’t see that coming, and I’m still thrilled. So instead of scribbling pages (I won’t even mention if they’re brilliant or not—you can just guess), I’m clicking away in the corner of my room while my younger sister snoozes. (I’m a morning person…)
I’ve also been trying to go running in the mornings. (Again, before the whole “being sick” thing.) I’m not a very athletic person, but I’ve talked to a lot of people who enjoy running, and I thought I’d give it a try. It is a good way to start the day. I’ve been going early (okay, okay—any time before eight a.m. I’m calling “early”) to beat the heat, and I kind of like it. I sound like an asthmatic steam engine, but I think once I get the breathing thing down, it will be even better.
Besides writing and running, I’ve been cooking dinner with my mom and sister—very fun. I love being in our huge kitchen again… though the apartment kitchen was fun enough.
I’ve also started pulling sources together for my honors thesis—eek! I’m supposed to spend this summer researching. (My thesis proposal is due the first week of classes in September, so I need to get the bibliography started now.) I’ve managed to find a bunch of books around the house that might apply, so I’ll sort through those before hitting our public library.
Once I get my energy back, I also need to finish unpacking…
So that’s the scoop from home! Pictures to come soon from the last weeks of school, so stay tuned.—jl
