gearing up
It wasn’t very long ago that I was saying all my goodbyes to the Calvin people… and now I have just a week and a half left at home! Time to start getting ready! All those pre-school errands for getting new contacts and new clothes and new haircuts and new books… I can’t believe it’s time already.
The biggest thing on my “before-school” to do list is finishing my honors thesis proposal. Whew! I’ve collected the sources I need (over twenty of them!), and I’m working on the essay that goes with it. I have a schedule of deadlines to hold my progress to over the semester… it’s like designing my own syllabus. But I’m starting to feel like I’m ready to tackle it. (That’s good news!)
I’ve been looking at the booklist for my other classes as well. My two lit classes will take up a lot of room on my bookshelf! But if you want to know about the British novel or adolescent lit, you’ll have to get a lot of books, I guess. (I actually don’t mind. I wouldn’t be a real English major if I didn’t like living with a lot of books.)
Then there’s oceanography class. One of the books is called “Mapping the Deep.” Whoa. Enough said.
Which leaves my Craft of Writing class—necessary for all us writing minors—Weight Training, and Organ.
A full semester! Before adding in the time I’ll spend working, sleeping, eating, and… oh, drinking coffee in the newly remodeled Johnny’s Cafe. And checking out the on-campus movies and concerts. And goofing off in general.
I’m moving in next Saturday or Sunday (still not sure which)... and then, the show begins! My last year at Calvin.—jl
