fifteen days in January
Well, this entry is long overdue. I am happily back at Calvin for Interim, these fifteen days of focusing on one or two subjects. I like the slightly slower pace—everyone seems a bit more relaxed. I’m taking grammar, which means that I have heard more about direct objects in the last two days than I have for the past five years…
It’s a great class—team-taught by two professors and enjoyed by about thirty-six English-minded people. My roommate Kim is in it with me, so we bond over subjects and predicates every night, comparing answers and debating parts of speech. (I never thought I would confuse a pronoun with an adjective, but it’s happened. Many times. I think I’m getting better at some of those stranger cases, though.)
I’m also taking badminton, which counts for my last P.E. credit. I didn’t realize that badminton is so aerobic—we’re all sweating hard after ten minutes of playing. But it’s also been fun. One of the girls from my freshman floor is there, and it’s been fun to get reacquainted with her. My sophomore year roommate is also there, and I like seeing her. It’s been a blast, even if my backhand stroke is still rotten. Singles tournament is next week…
So, my days are full of analyzing language and badminton rules, a bit of work, a bit of cleaning, a bit of planning. I’ve also been enjoying chai (honey vanilla white chai is about as close as you can come to putting poetry in a cup) and a CD my friend Karen gave me for Christmas. One song, “He’s Always Been Faithful” by Sara Groves, has really been a blessing these past few days. It’s the perfect antidote to anxiety—those post-graduation fears that creep up from time to time.
I’ve also been reading The Screwtape Letters, by C.S. Lewis, and I love it. Somehow I didn’t think that eavesdropping on fictional demons could inspire my own devotions, but it does. Seeing God from a different perspective reminds me of those truths that I’ve forgotten about or taken for granted. Lewis keeps showing the character and heart of God in new ways—it really helps me to remember how incredible He is.
Three class days down, and twelve to go…—jl
