countdown to thanksgiving

My parents should be nearly home. They left this morning, after a few days of hanging out with me. We had such a good time (nothing unusual for us), and I’d be bummed to see them go, except I’ll see them again in a week and two days!! Thanksgiving is nearly here… (Can you smell the green bean casseroles?? The best use of those crispy sprinkled onion things. Ever.)

The first part of this week is a blur—I worked overtime to get as much done as I could before my parents came on Wednesday night. Wrote a couple of papers while listening to a lot of jazz… and may I say that “My Funny Valentine” is a terribly patronizing song? Beautiful music, highly unflattering lyrics. Then spent Thursday night studying in Barnes and Noble while my parents alternately kept me company and browsed for books. (I got a new copyediting handbook “with answer key,” woo hoo, that I am super excited about. Seriously. I have a hard time explaining why punctuation rules thrill me… but they do.)

Then Friday was a blast. After I turned in my last two papers (whew!), hit the gym, and went to oceanography lab (it was meet-an-invertebrate day), Mom and Dad and I went out for dinner. We found a new noodle place on 28th street (aka restaurant row), which was awesome, and then sat in Starbucks for awhile, chatting. (YAY, Christmas drinks. Enough said.) It’s fun to share memories and hear about Mom’s recent visit to my younger sister in Nebraska, and what Mom and Dad have been up to.

We came back to Calvin and saw As You Like It, one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. Ah, Shakespeare. I had heard mixed reviews, but I absolutely loved it. (My parents did too.) I could not stop laughing. So that was great. I half-wish I could see it again tonight, but duty calls. Plenty of work to be done.

Anyway, this morning my parents and I went to Wealthy Street Bakery—my first time there. The “townies” came highly recommended, so Mom and I each tried one. (Yes: yum.) And I indulged my new-found love of chai. Another great talk and then they had to leave… a long drive back to St. Louis.

So hopefully they are nearly home, and I am conquering another weekend to-do list: lots of reading, a bit of writing, dish-washing, catching up with roommates. Listening to music, napping in the sun. Feels like the calm before the next storm: there’s a lot to do before those green bean casseroles!—jl
