autumn is coming…

The first day of autumn was faithfully stormy, just as I had hoped. I read The Castle of Otranto in Starbucks, sipping a Pumpkin Spice Latte (you have to try this), as the clouds got darker outside. Perfect. I felt so darn festive.

Now, only two days later, I have a roaring sore throat, stuffed head, runny nose, lack of energy… the works. Sigh. I guess that’s festive too—don’t you need to have a cold to usher in these weather changes?

I was feeling very optimistic about being sick yesterday. It meant I could stay inside, pull out that afghan my mom made me, and drink hot chocolate with cinnamon. Nice and cozy. Today it means I can’t get warm, my eyes hurt, and my throat feels dragonish. Not especially nice or cozy. Unfortunately, the rest of my apartment is also infected, so together we sound like a hospital ward. Rats.

But it’s a great bonding experience, right? Pass the cough drops, would you like some tea, could we trade soups, anyone have Kleenex? Mmmm, we’re bonding, but I think I could settle on other circumstances.

Still, it’s a chance to catch up on my oceanography readings. (Oops. Fell a little behind last week, as I worked on my honors thesis and Craft of Writing assignments…) It’s still kind of cloudy, and my afghan’s still out, so it’s perfect for studying. And I need to catch up on sediments and sea-floor spreading before our field trip next Friday. Hours aboard a research vessel! A bit out of the norm for an English major, so I’d better read up. And make a little more soup… cream of tomato or chicken ramen?—jl
