another poetic discussion

Today in poetry we had another guest speaker.  Pretty awesome.  I like seeing “real live poets,” so to speak… people that get their work out there and let others see it.  It takes a lot of courage and determination, and they have great advice.

Anyway, today we listened to Carrie Newcomer sing a few of her songs and then discuss songwriting.  I was really impressed with her voice and music, but also with the stories she told through her songs.

I never really considered songwriting an art (not that I thought it wasn’t art, I just never really thought about it at all).  But as she explained how she goes about crafting her songs and choosing ideas, how she approaches the writing itself and why she does it, I felt pretty sheepish.  She’s quite serious about her work, and it shows.  And I loved her songs.

God keeps encouraging me to write!  I’ve been thinking about using this next summer to experiment with writing styles, to put hours in consistently and see what I can do with it.  This past week has really clinched that plan.  I’ve been given so much quality advice on how to go about writing that I just want to clear the time and space so I can get down to it.

Four weeks away!!  I can’t believe summer is coming so quickly…
