by the way (not to brag)

Waaay back in fall semester (ages and ages ago—ha ha), I took a Creative Non-Fiction writing class. We worked on writing, um, creative non-fiction. Essays about our thoughts, opinions, childhood. That kind of thing. (Not persuasive essays about capital punishment, or researching and source citation stuff.)

Fantastic class. Our last project was to revise one of our earlier essays and send it out for publication… and then see if it got accepted.

the story of break: part two (whew)

Back to school after a second break (or the second half of break)... and it really is good to be back. The longer I stayed at home, the more I started thinking about those essays and projects that I really really (really) need to start working on. All the frustrations from my last entry are clearing up… That said, it was still great to be home.

the eye of the storm

I’ve spent forty-seven hours in a car over the last week and a half, and I have sixteen more to go. By Easter Monday, my road trip thirst will be successfully quenched. (Don’t you think??)

the story of break: part one

So, nearly a week into break, and I thought I ought to give an account of myself… It’s been pretty laidback, actually, which is nice. Last Friday I left Calvin around one and drove home with my dad and sister (Adrienne, the younger one. You’ll meet her again later).

the life of the copy editor

Last night, at my internship seminar, we took a field trip… to the library.

And I have all these flashbacks to second grade, going to the Science Center in St. Louis, with all those “room moms” keeping track of where I was and holding my hand too tight…

It’s not the same when eight upperclassmen cross a parking lot to Hekman Library. I didn’t even get a sack lunch.

the death of pride (once again)

I’ve taken music lessons for most of my life. There have been years of piano, with various teachers… clarinet, again, with various teachers. Piano again and again. Now organ. And there’s a phenomenon that never seems to go away: no matter how well my fingers (and now feet) have behaved in private, all control is lost once my teacher sits down expectantly beside me.

living arrangements

So it’s that time of year when everyone is thinking about housing for the next year.  Who should I live with, can we still stand each other, who’s bringing the microwave, which apartment complex is the best, which side of the building is the sunny side…  [Seriously.  That’s crucial to know for afternoon naps.  We don’t want to be sunless next November.  Well… when there is sun, we don’t want to miss it.]  “Room Draw”—which is when we figure out exactly which apartment/dorm room is home sweet home—is next Wednesday, so it seems to be on everyone’s mind.

And I’ve decided that I’d like to live in Barnes & Noble next year.  It’s a bit of a walk, since I don’t have a car, but they serve Starbucks coffee and light sandwiches, and the little café is surrounded by the most beautiful books you’ve ever seen.  Not only would I survive, I would thrive...

the swing of things (welcome to march)

Things are starting to get a little more hectic… longer editing assignments, more readings for class, a lab project, and spring break around the corner.  Spring semester is starting to feel a little less “new.”

So, I went to Rangeela for the first time last Friday, and I was absolutely blown away (and kicking myself for missing it freshman year.  Last year I was an ocean away, so don’t blame me for that one).  It’s amazing how talented and diverse and proud the Calvin community is.

(happy Chinese Lantern Festival day!)

Does anyone know what we’re supposed to do to celebrate the Chinese Lantern Festival?  I don’t know.  My calendar just said that it’s today, and so I’d love to do something for it, I just don’t know what.  Maybe I’ll dig out my tea light candles and have ramen for dinner.  I’ll use my chopsticks.  That’s probably the closest I’ll get to festive on short notice.  Rats.  I don’t even have a lantern.  (Growing up we had a great picture book about a big lantern.  I have no idea what it was about.  Was the main character’s name Tuppy??  Has anyone else heard of this??  Wow.  Unexpected blast from the past.)

This weekend flew by, as did the first part of the week… can’t believe we’re at Wednesday already.  Spring semester always feels like sledding downhill… it just picks up, you go faster and faster, and then you’re done!!  I leave in two weeks for spring break.  Unreal.

Book Study and Phone Surveys… (happy happy Friday)

WE MADE IT TO FRIDAY!!  I wasn’t in any doubt, really, but after years and years of being pumped for Friday, I can’t help it.  I just have to be excited!!  Woo woo!!  This wasn’t even a stressful week… life is good.  Still, I can handle a weekend…

So, what’s been going on?  Wednesday night was the second meeting of a book study I recently joined.  We’re reading and discussing Every Young Woman’s Battle.  Pretty awesome.  This is a group of about ten ladies from the Knollcrest East apartments, and we’re meeting once a week to talk about the book.

Finger-Stretching, Resocialization, and Maximus

Monday, at my organ lesson, I discovered that I have a small hand.  No kidding.  My younger sister has the longest, most beautiful fingers, and mine have always seemed a little stubby in comparison.  But after fifteen years of piano lessons, I thought that they worked for me.  I can hit the notes, I can hold a pen—no problem.  Sadly, organ demands a little more.  A broader reach.  More flexibility.  And so, I began work on a page of finger stretches.  An innocent enough name…

Triumph!!  (Woman versus computer)

I was going to put this in the previous entry where it belongs, but I’m so proud of myself for figuring out the computer that this picture gets its own entry.

These are the ladies from the Valentine’s Party last night…  L to R: Jen, Sarah, Maria, and Laura.

It all comes down to where you sit.  (Happy Valentines Day!)

This weekend was a blur.  Saturday I did my homework and then went over to the showing of “Spring Summer Fall Winter and Spring.”  Good movie.  But, with my impeccable judgment of place, I sat directly behind a tall guy with a decently large head.  Rats.  Didn’t realize this until the lights went down and I couldn’t see enough to trade places.  So part of the screen was obliterated by his silhouette.  My own fault.  Anyway, the two-thirds of the screen that I could see featured a beautiful movie.  Excellent cinematography.  [That’s my big film word.  I like using it.]

Richard III and Company

Last night, my friends Jen and Maria and I headed over to Calvin’s lab theater for Richard III.  I got hooked on Shakespeare last spring, when I took my first real course in Shakespeare.  (To be completely honest, I never liked the guy before that.  Sheesh, I didn’t like opera, didn’t like Shakespeare… crazy.)  Anyway, after reading Macbeth, I was sold.  Hamlet was good.  Othello.  Twelfth Night.  Much Ado about Nothing.  But I hadn’t read Richard III or seen it.
