Photo Album: Last Few Days…
I’ve been horribly remiss in showing you what’s been going on… So sorry.
Anyway… here I am deliriously happy to take a break from writing three essays—off to Honors Convocation…

petra
So you’ve probably heard about the huge Petra exhibit that Calvin is hosting. Petra is everywhere… “Taste Petra,” “See Petra,” “Dig Petra,” “Dance Petra”... well, I’m lucky enough to be able to “Write Petra.”
This past Friday, my poetry writing class met by the box office of the Petra exhibit. The English department covered the ticket prices, I think, and we were able to go through the exhibit during class. (Though my friend Sarah and I agreed: fifty minutes isn’t nearly long enough.)

recovery room
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pretty proud of myself. Very proud of myself. I feel like I’ve done the impossible… Well, not the impossible. The improbable (as Captain Jack Sparrow has educated me on what can and what can not be done).
Alright, whatever: I turned in three essays today (three!!), and I didn’t know if I was going to make it. But I did. And it feels good.

arts & sciences
It’s that time of year again… Academic Advising. It’s the time when everyone chooses classes for next year, everyone wonders if their schedule will work out, everyone figures out if they can graduate in time, etc. etc.
It’s also when I get very excited about being an English major. Leafing through the course catalog, I always take care to crease the binding so it opens easily to the “English” section. Then I spend ages reading all of the course descriptions… History of the English Language… Russian Literature… Craft of Writing…

a funny thing happened…
Sooo, just got back from seeing Calvin’s production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. I grew up hearing (and singing) the song “Comedy Tonight,” but I hadn’t seen a version of the musical until tonight (and it was a comedy… so I saw a comedy… tonight…). Everyone promised it would be funny, and as soon as I saw “Rappelling Coach” listed as one of the crew, I knew it would be a blast.

holy week
Sunday afternoon I joined a bunch of kids to go watch my apartment-mate (Becca) sing in the Gospel Choir concert. It was truly amazing. A few students opened by playing worship songs and leading us in praise. Then the choir processed out, and the “concert” began. (Though, as the emcee and the students kept reminding us, it wasn’t a concert as much as it was a “praise opportunity”—a chance for all of us to join our voices in praising God.)

light a fire
Last night was awesome. I joined a big group of kids from Alpha and Gamma (two of the KE apartments) for a bonfire. We drove to a park just ten minutes (or so… I’m bad with time) away, where there was a big sand dune surrounded by tall, thin pine trees.

another poetic discussion
Today in poetry we had another guest speaker. Pretty awesome. I like seeing “real live poets,” so to speak… people that get their work out there and let others see it. It takes a lot of courage and determination, and they have great advice.

from a camel
So, you know that verse about a camel going through the eye of a needle? I know that I’m taking it wildly out of context, but I always think of that image during the end of a semester. And I would be the camel… looking at my list of essays, projects, and exams, and thinking: Yeah, right, like I can squeeze through there.

the road not taken
We had a guest lecturer in Poetry Writing today: Rod Jellema. We had been given a few of his poems to read over the weekend, and I really liked them, but they didn’t have his name on them, so I didn’t realize they were his. Then he came into class, and Professor Klatt announced that we had been reading his poetry over the weekend. Everything clicked.
And I was thrilled, because I knew I wanted to write like that, and I couldn’t wait to hear what he had to say.

dance dance dance
So, last night I went to Dance Guild’s spring 2005 performance… “Shake Your Groove Thing.” Pretty awesome show. My roomie (roommate) was in two of the dances, and I recognized a bunch of other people…

the loudest noise i will ever make
Tonight I went to an organ studio class at LaGrave CRC church in downtown Grand Rapids. Studio class is a great way to stay humble. Basically, everyone plays a piece on the organ (or piano or cello or whatever lessons you all are in), and the other organ students listen and clap politely. Seriously, it really is a cool way to meet other students and hear pieces that you might be good enough to play someday. (Or next week. Who knows?)

spring fever
So it’s absolutely gorgeous outside, and all I really want to do is sit on our balcony and watch the trees bud. Instead, I’ve been bringing my homework for poetry class or for sociology out there with me. It’s a bit of a compromise, but I sneak furtive glances at the trees, I still feel the breeze, and the homework gets done after all.

This is Adrienne, my younger sister!

concert (and a sense of humor)
I just (just) got back from a piano concert—part of Calvin’s Artist Series. [I decided to go last minute—bought the ticket this afternoon. Seven dollars with the student discount—seven dollars!! When else can you go and listen to an internationally beloved musician for seven dollars? It was a good seat, too. I’ll really miss the student discount after I graduate…]
I haven’t been to a piano concert in ages, and I forgot how much I loved them… made me homesick to be playing piano again, much as I love the organ.
