vacation!!!
Whew! Back from Minnesota! (And we leave for Nebraska this weekend… wow.) My family and I had an awesome time in Duluth and Minneapolis. Rented a cabin for a few days, and spent the time kicking back, exploring, and skipping rocks. (I skip rocks better sitting down… is that wimpy or proper technique??)

the nashville account
Whatever happened to the idea of staying still? Last weekend, the girls of my family all got together in Nashville, TN. The day after tomorrow, four of us drive up to Minnesota… none of this lazy-day couch-potato syndrome for us! (But I like it this way.)
The time in Nashville was fun. We say that we went there for a baseball game, but the main attraction was my older sister Kristen. She’s lived down there for two years, I think, and we go down to see her for any reason.

the last month
So I think we’ve all recovered from the family reunion last weekend. It was a great few days—I really enjoyed getting to see my extended family again. I got to talk more with a few second cousins (or is it first cousins once removed??) and my great aunts and great-aunts. We all played games, had a lot of good food, shopped in a nearby town (Lebanon Illinois, where, weirdly enough, Charles Dickens stayed during his tour of America. strange, eh?).

reuniting
Are we really creeping up on August? Seriously? This summer is flying by. I can’t believe that it’s halfway over… I still feel like I just got home!

north carolina! part two: ocean
So the second part of our trip started in Edenton, North Carolina. We didn’t know much about Edenton, except it was close to the ocean, but not super-pricey. (Hey, good enough for me.) It’s on the Albemarle Sound, though, so we still got to see water there. It turned out to be a pretty small town, but with a gorgeous historical district. Mom and I spent July Fourth writing at Acoustic Coffee (where they introduced me to cinnamon hazelnut coffee—the best ever!) and then at our hotel.
north carolina! part one: mountains
I’m back!! Safely sitting in Illinois again, with my suitcase unpacked, postcards spread out, etc. etc. It’s great to be home—somehow the trip felt longer than it actually was. But Mom and I had a really great time. We saw all kinds of new places, and we got a lot of writing done, too.

here, there, and everywhere: hotel langefeld
It’s been ages since I’ve thrown out an update, and so much has happened! Two weekends ago, my older sister came up for a Father’s Day visit, and we all helped get my younger sister ready to head out to Europe. (Did I mention being jealous? Once the travel bug bites…)

between things
Whew! How can summer be such a whirlwind? Almost busier than the school year… almost.
Anyway, last week was the Write-to-Publish conference in Chicago. It was a packed four days!

on the road… again…
So much for peace and relaxation! Ha ha ha. Tomorrow morning, my mom and I head up to Chicago for the Write-to-Publish conference. This is her third time attending… and my first!
the farewell album
So… the long awaited “goodbye” series of pictures… Remember the endless series of “see-you-later” lunches and dinners I had during the last weeks of school? Here’s the proof I was there… Enjoy!

i’m sick, how are you?
Why do I always get sick during vacations? Here I am, two weeks into summer, and sick with a cold. (Such an un-summery sickness, too.) All my precious unpacking-and-sorting energy is redirected to battling whatever is attacking my throat and nose… and all my boxes from the apartment are collecting dust in the dining room.

settling in
So, I’m safe and sound at home, as of Sunday afternoon. Whew! It’s been a busy couple of weeks. Wrapping up the last classes, cleaning the apartment, and seeing the other girls off… I can’t believe that that’s it for another year! [And next year’s my last… I don’t feel like I’ve been at Calvin long enough to be a senior!]

and we’re winding down
You’re going to get tired of my “we’re almost there” entries… but there’s just a lot of tying things off right now. Blowing off steam. Relaxing too much. Cleaning apartments. Farewell lunches and dinners and coffee trips. Oh, yeah, and final exams, which are supposed to be the major focus. I nearly forget about them, although my roommates don’t have that luxury of forgetting… I, however, have a light load this week. Lucky me!

last day of class!
“Bittersweet” is an overused word, especially at this time of year. Everyone’s saying it. Or thinking it. Including me, I have to confess, despite my reluctance to fall in… But it’s true.
Today was the last day of classes, for spring semester and therefore (if you’re not sticking around for the summer), the entire year. Sweet. And some of the best people in the world are graduating or leaving… Bitter. So even I am lapsing into clichés… Rats.

senior design night
This past Saturday, I joined a few friends over in the Science Building for the Engineering department’s senior design night. My pals (Sarah and Laura—you remember them) and I were supporting two friends that lived on our dorm floor two years ago. Anyway, I missed out on most of the festivities (earlier they had an open house, followed by a dinner), but I was able to hear each of them present their projects. They were mercifully clear about their processes and the finished designs. I learned so much!
