Spring Break-Florida
Its been a while since I last posted, but things have been pretty crazy. Leading up to Spring Break, my weeks were pretty stressful. It was so convenient that all my projects, papers, and exams fell in the two weeks leading up to Spring Break. It all started with my Math exam, followed by Psychology, Religion, Geology, and I even had a Geology Lab exam in which I had to identify fifty rocks and minerals. Normally this would be really tough to get through, but it was even harder with Spring Break around the corner. Needless to say when all this was done, I was ready for Spring Break.
For Spring Break, I went down to Florida with a group of friends from the soccer team and also my friend from back home. Once classes let out on Friday, I left to go back to Ohio to meet my friend. It was a longer trip than usual as the snow storm had just started and I was heading right into it. When I finally got home, I quickly packed my bathing suits and ate some food before I was on the road again. Most of the guys that I had gone to Florida with took off straight from Calvin, but I went home to meet up with my friend and also my brother and all of his friends from school. It was really nice that his spring break happened to fall on the same week as mine. So once we were all packed, eight of us took off from Ohio to head to Florida. It was a miserable drive as we had to go right through Columbus which was one of the worst places. I later found out that Columbus had set a record for snowfall and we drove straight through it. Once we got through Ohio, we still had to go through Kentucky and Tennessee. Driving all night at speeds of 30 MPH and less made for an extremely long trip. Things finally got better a little ways past Nashville when we had finally gotten into Alabama. Once we were in Florida, it had finally gotten to 70 degree weather. I was in the car around 27 hours from the time I left Calvin until I finally arrived at my destination in Florida.
I had an awesome time in Florida. I got to spend a lot of time with the soccer guys, a couple basketball players, my friend from back home, and also my brother and his friends. The weather was pretty good most days reaching around 75 degrees which was just enough to give pretty much everyone a burn. That was certainly something I have not experienced in a while since I have been in snowy Grand Rapids for the past couple months. Most days consisted of sleeping in and then getting up and heading to the beach. We played some soccer on the beach and also threw the football around quite a bit. There was even a volleyball tournament hosted on the beach and the winners of the tournament would win free IPods. Some of the guys that I went down with entered into the tournament and did really well. They ended up losing in the semifinals. The team they lost to ending up winning the whole thing so they certainly should not feel bad. Also while I was down there they had hosted a couple of concerts. Kenny Chesney and Lupe Fiasco were down there. I am not a big country fan so I went to the Lupe Fiasco concert that was on the beach. While we were down there, we went out to eat a couple of times and got some good food. One night I went to eat at this restaurant called Pineapple Willy’s. It was supposed to be a pretty good seafood place, but I don’t even like seafood so I just got some grilled chicken. We also met up with some other friends from Calvin and went out to eat at this Italian restaurant as you can see in the picture. Unfortunately, I was very rushed on the way out of Calvin in order to beat the storm that I forgot my camera. So the only picture I have of the trip is the one that someone else took.
The way back to Calvin was another very long trip. It was a long week of being on the beach and I was not looking forward to the long drive. The drive certainly went smoother second time around, but I did not get to Grand Rapids till 4:30 Sunday morning. I slept most of Sunday and to be honest I still have not recovered. Surprisingly, Sunday afternoon was a really nice day. When we got back to Calvin, we threw the football around outside and caught up with all of other friends who had gone on trips. It was a good time listening and sharing with each other all about our trips.
Sunday night is the start of one of my favorite sporting events. I love College Basketball and March Madness is so intense and so much fun to watch. I am a faithful Buckeye fan and unfortunately they were not one of the teams selected into the tournament this year. At the same time, I am also a very big North Carolina fan and that is who I will be rooting for to go all the way in the tournament this year. I always enjoy filling out brackets for fun to see how well I do at picking the wins and upsets. Every year, you can count on something crazy happening and that is what I love about college sports. I can’t wait for the first round to begin on Thursday.
It is Monday night tonight, and it was a long day of sitting in classes. It is hard to get back into the swing of things after being on break for a little while. Monday is one of my longer days, but I got through my classes alright. After classes today, I went to go try out a new gym. I am not very happy that Calvin’s gym is closing for such a long time, so I decided to go check out some places in search for a good place to get a work out in. After working out, I met up with some of my friends to play cards in Johnny’s. We played Euchre tonight and I was very lucky tonight as I got a lot of good cards. Being that it is Saint Patrick’s Day, It must have been the Luck of the Irish!
