Every year Calvin’s international students put on a variety show called Rangeela in which they display mostly the music and dances of their various cultures.  They always put on such a phenomenal show.  Well, at least the past two years they have.  I didn’t see it before then because I was in high school in Iowa.  But the performances are beautifully executed and well put together, and so many cultures are represented.  There were dances, skits, songs, and demonstrations from Thailand, New Zealand, the Phillippines, South Africa, Ireland, China, Vietnam, India, Korea, and various European and African countries.  I don’t think there are pictures up on Calvin’s website yet, but you can see the preview video on  Or visit Calvin’s international student webpage at  There are some cool things going on here at Calvin.

One of my favorite parts about Rangeela is that it falls on Sibling’s Weekend, so the audience is full of Calvin students and their younger siblings, and those younger siblings really love the show.  Their joy at seeing the different cultures is a reminder of how blessed we are to have those cultures represented among us here.  It’s also nice just to see the kids enjoying Calvin and the Calvin students enjoying their siblings.  My sister came for a visit last weekend, so she wasn’t here for Sibling’s Weekend.  That was probably good because I had so much homework this weekend, and since I’m on the Activities Council for my dorm I had to spend four hours yesterday hosting free bowling at the nearby bowling alley.  It is part of the Siblings Weekend package.  Siblings pay $25 to come for the weekend and then they get all their meals for free in the dining hall and get to participate in various Calvin sponsored activities, like bowling.  It is sort of fun to sit at the bowling alley and assign lanes to all the siblings that come through, but it definitely made doing homework last night more pressing, and who likes to do homework on Saturday night?  I did it for awhile and then I went to see “Akeelah and the Bee” with my roommate Patience, our floormate Liz, and Liz’s little sister Laura.  Then we came back here and ate cupcakes in celebration of Laura’s 11th birthday this coming Tuesday.  Liz is really nice about “sharing” her sister on Siblings Weekend since many of my friends don’t have younger siblings, so we’re all a bit homesick when Siblings Weekend comes around.  Or maybe we’re just jealous of all the cute kids.  There are some really cute ones.  Walking back from the movie last night we saw a little boy, probably 7 years old, with a giant M painted on his face (obviously a UofMichigan fan), trying to jump from blue tile to blue tile all the way across the overpass.  Very cute.
But now it’s back to homework for me.  Unfortunately I have not finished yet.
