International Banquet

Last Friday I had the opportunity to participate in a Calvin activity that I had never before enjoyed.  The International Student Activities Committee puts on a banquet once a semester, and last Friday was the “Winterlights” Fall 2007 banquet.  Anyone can go, but mostly just international students do.  They can bring dates though, and since I’ve become good friends with a number of the international students at Calvin, mostly males who have girlfriends back at home, I got to go as my friend Lee’s “date.”

The evening started out a bit late, as my roommate Lindsey (who was going as our friend Stephen’s “date”) and I found ourselves not quite ready when we were supposed to be meeting the boys.  Oops.  They were very understanding about it, though.  One of their friends is married and was over for a visit with his wife and their new baby, so Lee and Stephen were happy to play with the baby while they waited for us.  When all was prepared the four of us drove downtown to Sanchez, a Spanish tapas restaurant where portions are served family-style and passed around the table for all to share.  The food was delicious, as it always is there.  Lindsey, Stephen, Lee, and I sat with our friend Amos (maybe you remember him as one of my summer coworkers).

After dinner was a dance.  Now Lee is one of those guys who simply does not dance, so he mingled and I danced with my girlfriends.  Eunji is Korean and Marie grew up in the Dominican Republic, and it was so fun to have them at the dance.

It was such a fun evening.  I saw lots of friends that I don’t get to hang out with much now that I live off-campus, and everyone looked so great, all dressed up.  Here’s me with Lindsey and Marie, with Mic (Amos’ brother and another summer coworker), Freddie, and all the juniors at the dance.
