a bridal shower

My brother is getting married in August, and I am very excited.  His fiance, Mary, is such a great person for him to spend his life with and she fits into our family so well.  Plus, she’s just really likeable.  She had a bridal shower in Cedar Rapids, our hometown, early in the summer but my mom’s side of the family all lives in Grand Rapids, MI, and wanted to be able to give her a shower too.  So a couple of weeks ago we all gathered at one of the home of one of my aunts for a shower.  All of the aunts and female cousins from my mom’s side of the family were there, along with Mary and her mom.

The first thing we all had to do was ooh and ahh over the newborn kittens in my aunt’s garage.  Her mouser had recently given birth to five kittens, and my little cousins were so excited.

We started out playing some typical shower games.  There was a quiz on how well we knew Mary (fittingly, her mom won that), a wedding-word scramble, and Two Truths and a Lie, the game where you tell two things about yourself that are true and one that is false, and then everyone has to guess which is the falsehood.

We ate great food, told funny family stories, and then Mary opened her gifts.  There was lots of tissue paper involved, which didn’t cause Mary to go into a frenzy, but it did have that effect on some of the littler cousins.

At the end of the party we enjoyed the most delicious chocolate covered ice cream bonbons.  A scoop on mint chocolate chip ice cream, covered in fudge and frozen, and then drizzled with more chocolate before served.  Yum.

Here are Mary and me before we ate:

It was so fun to have all the aunts and girl cousins together for an afternoon, and when it was all over I got to ride home with my mom and Mary’s mom for a week of vacation.
