To Introduce Myself…

Thursday, May 31, 2007

By Michaellynn

I decided it would be a good idea to introduce myself!  I’m in my Junior year as a business major here at Calvin, and I’ve kept my semesters really busy working with Chimes, the Calvin student newspaper, as well as being involved at my local church on a worship team and as part of a small group.  I’m excited to work with all the student organizations next year as the Student Senate Finance Chair.  I also enjoy rollerblading, walking barefoot in the grass, and reading novels by Dee Henderson, my favorite author.  This past year I spent some time working for Campus Safety as an escort driver and I had a great time meeting a lot of other Calvin students by giving them rides around campus.  I’m enjoying living in the on-campus apartments, which allows me to walk to work and class every day, and it’s teaching me a lot of very important skills, like how to cook. :)

Anyway, I’m really excited about all the Passports and Quest, and even more excited about welcoming all the new students to Calvin!  See you all this Summer and in the Fall!

looking back on dorm life…

By Karen

wow. I cannot believe that summer is already here. For me, this summer involves a lot of orientation and showing you what Calvin College is really all about.

What is Calvin College all about? For me, a big part of Calvin was the dorms.  I loved my dorm this year. This year I was the activities coordinator aka. AC on my floor. As an AC, I planned floor dates like apple picking, skating, making caramel apples and late night steak and shake runs for my floor and one other guys floor. I will never forget the thunderstorm during our apple picking floor date. It poured so much that the apple orchards were super muddy. Needless to say, we picked apples in the mud and got filthy. Oh well, at least it was good bonding.  Other highlights from the year were our dorm retreat up at camp at the beginning of the year, our dorm service auction, and our year end BBQ. But the most memorable event was our dorm banquet. We dressed up, went to the Children’s Museum in downtown Grand Rapids, ate and danced the night away. I guess the best part of the whole year was getting to know the wonderful people in my dorm and making some sweet memories with them. Aside from the planned events, I will never forget the trips to 7/11 on Tuesday nights, the late night chats with girls on my floor in the coffee kitchen or the speed walking races down my hall.  Oh the joys of dorm life…

rockin the o.board

Hello again!  We on the Orientation Board enjoyed a long weekend to celebrate Memorial Day.  A few of us went out of town with friends, others just relaxed here in Grand Rapids.  Back in the office on Tuesday, we had a good long meeting to talk about what we need to do before our retreat this weekend.  For me, the main task is more video taping!  We shot all day yesterday, mostly outdoors in the hot hot sun.  It was a good time, although pretty tiring.  We’re happy with how the scenes are turning out.  They make us laugh, so hopefully they will amuse you too.

Okay, time for me to get to work.  Peace.

Life at Calvin

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

By Andy Allen

Hey what’s up everyone. My name is Andy and I’m a Junior here at Calvin College. I’m also an Orientation intern hence why I’m writing this blog to you all. I hope your summers are going well or if they haven’t begun yet, I hope they will go well and you finish up school strongly. I have had an incredibly busy couple of weeks ever since Calvin let out two weeks ago. I am a captain on Calvin’s Ultimate Frisbee team and we just went to nationals in Versailles, Ohio.  We were ranked 23rd and ended up taking 11th overall which we were very proud of. I know some of you are saying, “Really? Ultimate Frisbee? A real sport? Good one, random dude I’ve never talked to before.” But believe me, Ultimate is a huge deal to a lot of people and then also a “nothing sport” to a lot of others. Other than that, I’ve been working here on campus like crazy and watching a lot of construction going on around here. The new field house is being built and one of the dorms (Beets Veenstra) is also being remodeled.  It is a very cool, refreshing thing to watch so much going on and being able to witness it first hand. I am very excited for all of you to become part of this Calvin Community that we all love and enjoy. I hope your summers are going incredibly and you are as excited (if not more) than I am for you all to come. It’s going to be a very busy, fast next couple of weeks. Enjoy them for all they are worth. Be blessed

Andy Allen

You have to love life to live life.

first week in the O.board office!

Thursday, May 24, 2007

By Amy

We’ve come to the end of the first week!  Everyone started off Monday morning pretty full of energy and pumped about the summer, and the excitement level has definitely remained stable through the week.  We all have our separate to-do lists (which are super long at this point!) and different projects we’re in charge of.  It’s a little overwhelming, but it’s encouraging to know that specific people will be in charge of handling specific tasks.

The part of the summer I’m most involved in is the Opening Session for Passports.  We’ve been working on scripts and ideas for the past month or so, and now we finally get to hammer out the details and see our ideas come alive!  We’ve got some amazing brainstorming people (Michaellynn and Dan) and a hilarious writer (Andy) working on plans for the video clips, so we have some really fun stuff planned.  We started shooting for real last night, and we’re spending most of the day today in front of the camera.  This will probably continue through the next two weeks.  It’s so much fun!  The hardest part is keeping a straight face while we’re acting, because the lines are too funny and our team is so goofy.  But we’ll definitely pull it off, and I think it’s going to be a hit.

Happy Memorial Weekend!  We’re off Friday-Monday, and then back at it on Tuesday.  I’m actually going to miss the office this weekend.  It’s good to have a job you look forward to every day.  :)

Until next time~
