Football Learning Event

Okay, so it was a little cold out last Friday night, but we went to the East Grand Rapids football game anyway.  The fans were pretty into the game (mostly to keep warm) and the players brought their game, too.  It was funny to be hanging around with High School and Middle School aged kids again (made me realize how little I miss High School).

On the way to the game, we discussed a little about football, except most of the people who went had already seen American Football before.  As the game went on, situations would come up in which someone would have to explain a ruling on the field and sometimes there were even disagreements about rules between people who supposedly know the rules of football.  I guess it goes to show how many rules there are in football compared to other team sports.

It was a pretty good football game.  East Grand Rapids won 21 - 0 and everyone who went had a good time, despite the frozen backsides.  As we talked during the game, we found out that High School football is bigger in some parts of the country than others.  John Medendorp acknowledged that football in Texas is a much bigger deal than here in Western Michigan.  I too, remember going to football games back home in Eastern PA where everything seemed bigger; the players, the crowds, and the general noise level of many games back east seem bigger.  Maybe I just have a slanted view because I was in High School when I went to High School football games.  Enough about this, but I think we should think about having a Mosaic Superbowl Party if anyone is interested.

Languages are pretty awesome.
It’s also pretty awesome living with a floor full of talented multilingual people!!!

This past Saturday, the second lobby was turned into a “classroom” of sorts…
Tape was put down on the floors to section off the areas where people could go to learn different languages.
..Kind of like countries all over the world. Everyone got a “passport” where they could write down what they learned throughout the event.

Here are some of the languages that were available: Chinese, ASL, Romanian, Wolof, Korean, Turkish, German, Japanese, Spanish, French, Uzbek, Russian, Norwegian, and Dutch.
Ten common phrases were selected to be learned in the languages: Hi/ bye, I love you, where is the bathroom?, how much is this?, you are beautiful, counting, ETC.
Many random phrases were shared as well. :]

It was great to see everyone coming together to learn AND share more about theirselves.

Have a great week everyone!

Food Night

Saturday, September 30, 2006

By Liz Brush at 1:05 PM

Thanks to the culinary skills of floor members, Food Night was a scrumtuous success!  Those of us who were inclined to baking, cooking, frying, etc., made dishes from all around the world to share with their floormates.  Quesadillas, quacamole, pico de gallo, chicken curry, sushi, mutton stew, fudge, pavlova, kebabs, and spaghetti and meatballs were some of the delectable dishes we enjoyed. Not only was it delicious, but we learned about the different cultures that the food came from and what the dish means to our fellow Mosaicans.  We even thought a little about why food plays such an important role in community and so closely reflects a culture.  Food night was a great time of getting to know each other better as we enjoyed the yummy world cuisine!

Mosaic Kickoff

On September 4th the members of the Mosaic community were awaken and branded with cool bracelets.  Every year, the floor starts with a day retreat to get to know other residents on the floor and learn about what the floor is about-- the vision, the leadership and such. It’s usually a day of fun, games, but this year the leadership threw a twist… in hopes that all would be introduced to the other 60 some students but really get to know a smaller group. The rest of the day was spent with members with matching bracelets-- there was representation from the orange barb wire team to the blue checkers to the pink hearts.

With a great devotion about all being a part of a mosaic and a worship session, the day was underway. We laughed and learned about the awesome new band the PAs, our lovely RAs, and other key leadership for this floor. The morning was filled with high energy even though we were dragged out of bed at 7. Then, we played a few games to learn each other names, quick facts about the other 65 students, saw drawing abilities and then were sent out to find our lunches while really getting to know our groups. Yes, the twist this year was hidden lunches.

The afternoon was full of water fun. Overall it was a great day where God blessed us with sunshine and a lot of laughter. It was a great way to start the year.
