CIT will begin deploying a new iPrint client (version 4.38) on Monday afternoon, Nov. 24. This update will address a number of security and performance issues related to iPrint client. If possible CIT will deploy this update “silently” with no disruption to the user. Additional details will be provided as more information is available.

Sun has released a security update for the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). CIT will begin deploying this update to Windows workstations beginning Dec. 2.

JRE is a “behind the scenes” utility that is used to view many web pages and multiple versions may be found on a given computer. Each version must be upgraded separately. The following updates will be applied:
JRE 1.3.x patched to JRE 1.3.1_23
JRE 1.4.x patched to JRE 1.4.2_18
JRE 5.x (1.5.x) patched to JRE 5 update 16
JRE 6.x (1.6.x) patched to JRE 6 update 7

CIT will bundle the installation of these Java updates with the installation of Firefox 3. These Java updates are required for viewing some web pages when using Firefox 3.

Firefox has released version 3 of its browser and has announced it will discontinue to support for earlier versions in December 2008. CIT will deploy Firefox to Windows workstations beginning on Dec. 2.

Installation of Firefox 3 will take approximately 15 minutes and may require a reboot when the installation is complete. You will be prompted if a reboot is necessary on your computer. CIT will bundle upgrades to Flash and Java as these are required for viewing some web pages using Firefox 3.

CIT will deploy an upgrade to Flash Player 10 on Windows workstations beginning Dec. 2. Flash Player is a “behind the scenes” application used to view some web pages. Flash 10 is required to view Flash content when using Firefox 3 and so CIT will bundle it with the Firefox 3 installation also scheduled for Dec. 2.

Microsoft has issued critical security patch MS08-069. CIT will deploy this patch to affected Windows workstations beginning Dec. 2. If possible, this patch will be applied silently with no interaction or disruption to the user. Some workstations may be prompted to reboot following this patch.

Apple has released a security update for iTunes and Quicktime (version 7.5.5). CIT will begin deploying these updates to campus workstations beginning Dec. 9.

Although iTunes and Quicktime are separate applications they work closely together and Apple generally bundles updates for these products together. CIT will push these updates as a single update to affected workstations. If possible this update will run silently, however, often that is not possible with iTunes and Quicktime. If that is the case there will be a prompt to the user to begin installation and a reboot may be required after the installation. CIT will provide more details on this as more information is available.
