Breanna Verkaik Receives D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region Honors

Calvin College junior Breanna Verkaik has been named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region third team. She is receiving D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region honors for the first time. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik had a break-out season this year, averaging 15.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists-per-game. At the conclusion of the MIAA season, she was named to the all-conference first team. She was also named MIAA Player of the Week once. The Calvin women’s basketball team finished 19-8 overall and 12-4 in the MIAA which was good for a third place league finish. The Knights then reached the MIAA Tournament finals before falling to Hope to end the season.

Kruis and Brink Receive D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region Honors

Two members of the Calvin men’s basketball team have received D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region honors. Senior Tyler Kruis has been named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region first team while junior Jordan Brink has been named to the third team. Both players are receiving D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region accolades for the first time.
A senior, Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) averaged 15.5 points and 5.6 rebounds a game while connecting on 55.6 percent of his field goal attempts. Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) averaged 15.6 points and 3.5 rebounds a game while connecting on 45.5 percent of his three-point field goal attempts which ranks as the 10th-best single-season three-point field goal clip in Calvin men’s basketball history. He also connected on 65 triples during the year which is the 12th-best single-season total in Calvin hoops history. Calvin concluded its season last weekend with an overall record of 24-6, falling at sixth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan in the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament.

Lauren Spoelstra Named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in Women’s Lacrosse

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin goalkeeper Lauren Spoelstra its Defensive Player of the Week in women’s lacrosse for games played through March 16. Spoelstra, a senior from Oakland, N.J. (Eastern Christian HS), made six saves on 14 shots on goal in leading Calvin to a 15-8 victory over Robert Morris, Ill. She also had two ground balls and caused one turnover. Spoelstra is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Calvin is currently 2-2 on the year and scheduled to return to action on March 22 when it travels to Georgetown College of Kentucky for a non-conference game. Calvin was scheduled to face Aquinas this evening but that match has been postponed because of weather. A makeup date has not yet been set.

Women’s Lacrosse Claims 15-8 Win Over Robert Morris College

The Calvin women’s lacrosse team hosted Robert Morris University of Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Davenport University, looking for the Knights second win of the season. A hot start on a cold day allowed Calvin to build an early five goal lead, and the Knights never looked back en route to a 15-8 victory. Calvin jumped out to a 5-0 advantage with 17:33 to go in the first half as a balanced attack, with four Knights scoring, set the tone of the game early. The Knights have a quick turnaround as they will play Aquinas on Monday night at Davenport University. Monday night’s contest is scheduled to be played under the lights, starting at 8 p.m.

Men’s Lacrosse Picks up 12-5 Win over Houghton College of New York

STOW, OH – The Calvin men’s lacrosse team picked up its second victory of the year, defeating Houghton College of New York Saturday afternoon in a game played at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. Calvin is now 2-4 on the year. Junior Tim Marco (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Chris Griffin (Howell/Hartland HS) had three goals apiece. Freshman Joel Schaefer (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area Christian HS), freshman Mikal Wessell (Oviedo, FL/Ovideo HS) and junior Jonathon VanderLaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had two goals apiece. Senior Jon Ptashnick (New Baltimore, MD/Anchor Bay HS) had eight ground balls while junior Luke Bosscher (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had five. Senior Casey Harless (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had seven saves for the Knights.Calvin is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Methodist College (NC) for a 4 p.m. game.

Women’s Tennis Falls to Davenport 9-0

The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to visiting Davenport University Saturday morning inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.Calvin’s best chance for a point in doubles came at two doubles as the team of Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas HS) came up just short 8-6.Calvin’s best chance at a win in singles came at one singles as junior Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) fought hard before falling 6-2, 7-6.Calvin (1-4) is back in action on March 24 when it takes on Elmhurst College in a match scheduled to be played in Orlando as part of Calvin’s annual spring break trip to Florida.

Nicole Michmerhuizen Grabs Second Straight All-America Berth - Places Fourth in 3K at NCAAs

LINCOLN, NE - Calvin College senior Nicole Michmerhuizen claimed her second All-America berth in as many days at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships, placing fourth in the 3,000 meters Saturday afternoon with a time of 9:45.22. Saturday’s race marked the first year the NCAA has held the 3,000 meters indoors at its national meet. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Michmerhuizen made good on her first national opportunity in the 3K as well. She entered the race seeded seventh but made an early push to grab the lead and push the pace. Michmerhuizen’s race came one day after she placed second in the 5,000 meters. Her back-to-back All-America efforts helped Calvin finish with 13 points in the team standings and tie for 17th place.

NCAA III Tournament Run Ends for Calvin Men’s BBall Team With 78-64 Loss at Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, IL - The Knights continued NCAA Tournament play in the round of 16 on Friday evening, traveling to Bloomington, Illinois. Calvin’s “Sweet 16” opponent was host Illinois Wesleyan, and Friday night’s contest marked the first time the two schools matched-up in men’s basketball. The Titans entered at 25-4 and ranked #6 in the nation, while Calvin was 24-5 and #24 in the country. Unfortunately for Calvin, Illinois Wesleyan built a lead at the end of the first half, and with the crowd behind the Titans, the Knights could not come back and it was Illinois Wesleyan advancing to the Elite Eight with a 78-64 win to earn a matchup with Dickinson tomorrow night. Sophomore Jordan Daley and senior Tyler Kruis led the Knights in defeat with 12 point, while junior Jordan Brink added 11 and senior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) 10. The loss ends the careers of Tyler Kruis, Mickey DeVries, and Jordan Mast. Calvin’s season ends with a record of 24-6.

Men’s Tennis Claims 5-4 Win at Ripon College - Now 2-1 on Season

FOND DU LAC, WISC - The Calvin men’s tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 5-4 win at Ripon College Friday afternoon. Calvin once again took two of the three doubles points and then split the six remaining singles matches to gain the narrow victory. In doubles action, the number-two team of sophomore Matt Buesing (Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremnd HS) and senior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) claimed an 8-3 victory while the three doubles team of junior Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) and senior Stephen Healey (Twin Lakes, IN/Twin Lakes HS) pulled off an 8-0 triumph. In singles action, Griffin gained a 6-0, 6-0 win at three singles. Strikwerda also claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at five singles and Healey also won 6-0, 6-0 at six singles. Of note, senior Loukas Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) dropped a hard-fought three-set match at one singles with the third set concluding in an 11-9 decision. At two singles, sophomore Klaas Walhout (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also dropped a tight three-set match, falling 10-6 in the third set. Calvin is back in action again on March 18 when it travels to Spring Arbor for a 4 p.m. match.

Baseball Opens MIAA Campaign With 9-3 Victory Over Kalamazoo

CALEDONIA - The Calvin College baseball team opened up Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAA) play Friday night with a game against the Kalamazoo Hornets at Davenport’s Farmers Athletic Complex. The Knights were victorious by a score of 9-3. With Davenport playing a doubleheader in the afternoon, the Knights’ game didn’t start until just after 8:00. Due to the time constraints of the complex, the second half of the originally scheduled doubleheader has been postponed. A makeup date has not yet been finalized. Senior Peter Cupery started and earned the win for the Knights, giving up three earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. Cupery also went 2-3 with 2 RBI at the plate.
