The Calvin/Hope men’s basketball rivalry will be the subject of a documentary produced by Calvin alumn Ryan Terpstra. The documentary is scheduled to air on February 2 on WOOD-TV 8 in West Michigan at noon (EST). It will also re-air on cable outlets throughout the state of Michigan after the initial February 2 launch.
Thursday, January 30, 20142014 Calvin Men's Lacrosse Schedule
The Calvin men’s lacrosse team has been picked to finish sixth in the MIAA preseason lacrosse poll conducted by the league coaches. Calvin and Alma share sixth place in the poll with 33 points each. Defending league champion Adrian is the preseason pick to win the league. The Bulldogs received six first place votes. A year ago, Calvin finished 2-13 overall and 1-5 in the MIAA. Calvin is scheduled to open its 2014 campaign on February 7 when it competes against Carthage in a non-conference game in Pontiac, Michigan. Calvin will open its MIAA schedule on April 2 when it travels to Adrian for a 7 p.m. game.

The Kresge Gymnasium on the campus of Albion College was the setting for a first-place battle in MIAA men’s basketball on Wednesday evening. The Knights and Britons entered the contest both at 5-1 in the conference, with Calvin coming in at 13-4 overall and Albion at 11-6 overall. After leading by just four at halftime, the Knights expanded their lead to as much as 21 in the second half en route to a 68-49 victory. With the win, Calvin improves to 6-1 in the MIAA and 14-4 overall while Albion drops to 5-2 in the league and 11-7 overall. The Knights are now alone atop the MIAA, with Hope second at 5-1. The Flying Dutchmen, after having a game postponed, will make up a game next week Monday before playing the Knights on Wednesday. Calvin now looks forward to Saturday when it will host the Scots of Alma, with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.

ALBION - Calvin used a stifling defensive effort and a torrid three-point attack to claim an 81-46 conference victory at Albion Wednesday night inside Kresge Gymnasium. The victory stretches Calvin’s win streak to five games. During its current five-game win streak, Calvin has averaged 85.0 points a game. Throughout the first half, it appeared that neither team would get untracked offensively as the two teams were waged in a defensive scrum. Calvin went on a 16-0 run over the final six minutes of the first half however, fueled by eight points from junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) to take a 35-17 halftime advantage. As a team, Calvin connected on a season-high 13 three-pointers on 25 attempts for a sizzling 52.0 percent three-point clip. Calvin was led in scoring by Breanna Verkaik who matched a career scoring high with 20 points while Kayla Engelhard had 15 points. Anna Timmer had 11 points while junior Maria DeKuiper had 10 points.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Defending champion Adrian has been picked as the preseason favorite to win the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women’s lacrosse championship while Calvin has been picked to finish fifth. A year ago, Calvin finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings at 2-4 in conference play but missed the four-team MIAA Tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker rule. Calvin finished 4-12 overall. Calvin is scheduled to open its 2014 season on March 1 when it travels to Otterbein for a non-conference game. MIAA conference action across the league is slated to begin on April 2. Calvin’s league opener will be against rival Hope at Calvin.

The Calvin women’s basketball game with Trine scheduled for tonight (Jan. 27) at 6 p.m. at Van Noord Arena has been postponed due to weather conditions. The game has been rescheduled for February 3 at 7 p.m. at Calvin. In addition, the Calvin-Hope swim meet that was postponed on January 25 will not be made up and has now been cancelled. OLIVET - The Calvin men’s basketball team weathered the winter storm and traveled to Olivet on Saturday afternoon to face the Comets in a MIAA contest. After a low-scoring first half, the Knights exploded in the second, shooting better than 60% and scoring 59 points, to claim a 95-53 victory. Senior Mickey DeVries led all scorers with 21 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Senior Tyler Kruis added 15 and six rebounds while junior Jordan Brink scored 13. Calvin improves to 13-4 and 5-1 in the MIAA with the win, tied with Albion for first place after the Britons defeated Trine 68-65. Hope will have a chance to keep pace on Monday night after its Saturday matchup with Kalamazoo was postponed. Olivet falls to 3-13 and 1-4 in conference with the loss. The Knights now look forward to Wednesday when they will face the Britons in a first-place game at Albion. Wednesday night’s game is scheduled for 8 p.m. and will follow a Calvin-Albion matchup in women’s basketball to be played at 6 p.m.

The Knights men’s basketball team hosted the Thunder of Trine University on Wednesday evening, looking to stay in a tie for first place in the MIAA with a win. In the end, Calvin ran away with the win in the second half, defeating Trine 71-49 as the Knights held pace atop the MIAA, moving to 4-1 in conference play. Calvin is locked in a three-way tie for first place in the league standings with Albion and Hope. Senior Tyler Kruis led the Knights with 17 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the field, while adding six rebounds. Junior Tyler Dykstra tallied his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, also adding six blocks. Junior Jordan Brink also had 12 points. Dykstra’s points and rebounds set new career highs while his block total tied a career best. The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they travel to Olivet for an afternoon contest, scheduled to tip-off at 3 p.m.

ADRIAN – Calvin stretched its win streak to four games with an 83-64 win at Adrian Wednesday night. The victory keeps the Knights on the heels of second place Olivet as Calvin is 6-2 at the midpoint of the league schedule, one game behind the 7-1 Comets. Calvin used a 20-4 run over the final seven minutes of the first half to take control. Prior to the run, Calvin led 24-22. The offensive explosion allowed the Knights to build a 44-26 halftime lead. From that point, Calvin held control, building its lead to 35 points at 71-36 and then coasted the rest of the way.Calvin placed four players in double-figures in scoring led by junior Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) with 17 points while junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had 16 points. Junior Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had 12 points off the bench while senior Kirstin Tripp (Brighton/Brighton HS) had 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting while collecting five assists without a turnover to go with two steals. Sophomore Abby Springer (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills HS) also had five assists against just one turnover. As a team, Calvin posted 18 assists against just 13 turnovers. Calvin opens the second half of its MIAA campaign on Saturday, hosting Trine at 3 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Aaron Venema its Men’s Athlete of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through January 18. Venema, a sophomore from Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS), won two individual events and swam on a winning relay in leading Calvin to a 175-122 MIAA dual meet victory over Kalamazoo, the Knights’ first win over the Hornets since 2006. He won the 200-yard freesetyle in 1:44.98 and the 500 freestyle in 4:46.10, and swam a :48.30 split in helping Calvin win the 400 freestyle relay. Venema is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career. Venema is part of a Calvin men’s team that is currently ranked 13th nationally. The Knights will travel to rival Hope on Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet.2 3 > Last »
