Men’s Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season in 85-66 Defeat to Cornerstone in Hall of Fame Tourney

Calvin men’s basketball returned to work on Friday evening after a short Thanksgiving break, hosting the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic at Van Noord Arena this weekend. The Knights faced off against the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone University, playing in the second matchup of the evening as Hope College took a come-from-behind win from Aquinas College, 69-67, in the tournament opener. Friday night’s game was the 24th meeting between the Knights and Golden Eagles, with Calvin holding a 16-7 series advantage. Cornerstone added a win to its end of the series by the time the clock read all zeroes, handing Calvin its first loss of the season 85-66. Sophomore B.J. Van Loo led the Knights with 16 points and seven rebounds while junior Jordan Brink had 14 points. Calvin is back in action on Saturday, facing Aquinas at 8 p.m. with Hope facing Cornerstone in the 6 p.m. contest.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Manchester 78-50 to Improve to 4-0 on Season

MANCHESTER, IN - The 11th-ranked Calvin men’s basketball team rolled to a 78-50 victory at Manchester University Tuesday night to improve to 4-0 on the young season. After trailing 20-18 early, Calvin put on a 21-8 scoring run to grab a 39-28 halftime advantage. Calvin then held Manchester to 22 second half points while continuing to shoot at a 50 percent clip to put the game away. Junior guard Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led Calvin with 17 points including four three-pointers. Brink connected on three consecutive triples midway through the second half that allowed the Knights to build a 17-point lead. Brink was part of a solid back-court combo as sophomore guard Jordan Daley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Inside, Calvin featured the combo of senior Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) and junior Tyler Dykstra (Holland/Holland Christian HS) as Kruis had 11 points and two blocks while Dykstra had 13 points and four boards. Senior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) was also stellar with eight points and eight rebounds. Calvin will now prepare to host the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament Friday and Saturday at Van Noord Arena. Friday games will see Hope facing Aquinas at 6 p.m. and Calvin facing Cornerstone at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Hope will meet Cornerstone at 6 p.m. and Calvin will face Aquinas at 8 p.m. Tickets for each day are $10.00 and will be available at the door each night.

Women’s Basketball Claims 65-55 Win at Manchester

MANCHESTER, IN - The Calvin women’s basketball team got back on the winning track with a 65-55 victory at Manchester University Tuesday night. The win lifts Calvin’s season record to 3-2. Calvin held a 39-31 halftime lead and used a 12-5 run over the final three minutes of regulation to seal the win. Calvin led throughout the second half with Manchester closing to within two points on one occasion and then with three points at 53-50 late in the contest before the Knights pulled away for the win. Junior Breanna Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) led Calvin with 15 points including three baskets from beyond the three-point arc.  Junior Maria DeKuiper (Bradenton, FL/Bradenton Christian HS) had 13 points while junior Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) had 11 points.  Junior Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) added 10 points to round out a balanced Calvin scoring attack. Sophomore Abby Springer (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills HS) also chipped in with eight points including a pair of three-pointers.

Men’s Hoops Claims Calvin Tip-off Tourney Title with 97-81 Win Over College of Faith

The Calvin men’s basketball team claimed the title of the 13th annual Calvin Tip-off Tournament, defeating the College of Faith 97-81. Junior Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led the Knights with 17 points while senior Mickey DeVries (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) had 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior Tyler Kruis (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) and junior Tyler Dykstra (Holland/Holland Christian HS) were also both in double figures at 15 points and 10 points, respectively. Calvin shot 54.1% from the field, including 9-of-20 from behind the arc. The Knights also hit 22-of-25 free throws. Both DeVries and Brink were named to the all-tournament team while DeVries was named tournament MVP. Calvin will travel to Manchester on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. game.

Women’s Basketball Falls to Baldwin-Wallace 80-62 in B-W Invite Title Game

BEREA, OH – For one half of play, the Calvin womens’ basketball team stood toe-to-toe with the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace. The second half proved to be a different story however as Baldwin-Wallace limited Calvin to just 20 second half points – en-route to an 80-62 victory in the championship game of the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational. Calvin (2-2) led 42-41 at halftime, shooting 51.6 percent from the floor but shot just 27.6 percent from the floor in the second half while the Yellow Jackets (4-1) were able to move ahead by connecting on 10-of-14 free throw attempts over the final 20 minutes of play. Junior Maria DeKuiper (Bradenton, FL/Bradenton Christian HS) led Calvin with a career-high 18 points while junior Abby VanderWoude (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) had 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) added 10 points and four assists. At the conclusion of the tournament, Engelhard and junior forward Hannah Acre (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) were both named to the all-tournament team. Calvin is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Manchester for a 6 p.m. game.

THEY DID IT AGAIN!!

For the second time in four years, the Calvin women’s volleyball team has captured the national championship!! The Knights did so in dramatic style at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse, overcoming a two-sets-to-none deficit to win a 20-25, 12-25, 25-22, 25-17, 20-18 thriller. Playing in front of more than 3,300 fans, Calvin overcame an 11-8 deficit in the fifth set to win the match. Calvin took the lead at 13-12 and then had six championship point opportunities before finally putting away the win with a kill down the near sideline by senior Megan Rietema. Cal Lutheran (35-2) had one match point at 16-15 but the Knights fought it off with a kill by sophomore Maggie Kamp. Kamp finished with a team-high 27 kills and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. She was joined on the all-tournament team from Calvin by Rietema and senior Kristen Zietse. The national championship is the 10th in Calvin athletics history, joining the national title won by the 2010 volleyball team as well as crowns won in women’s cross country (1998 and 1998), men’s cross country (2000, 2003, 2004, 2006) and men’s basketball (1992, 2000).

Calvin Women’s Cross Country Takes Seventh at NCAA III Championships

HANOVER, IN - The Calvin women’s cross country team took seventh at the NCAA III Championships on Saturday with a team score of 309 points.  The finish is Calvin’s first top-10 national berth since 2010 and its best team finish since 2009. Freshman Cassie Vince (Amherst, OH/Amherst HS) led the way for Calvin with an NCAA III All-America finish of 23rd place in a time of 21:51. Vince is Calvin’s first freshman to claim NCAA III All-America honors in women’s cross country since Lisa Timmer did so in 1996. She is also the third to do so in Calvin women’s cross country history as Betsy Haverkamp also accomplished the feat in 1993. Senior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also earned a top-50 finish, placing 48th in a time of 22:10. Other Calvin finishers included junior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 89th place (22:34), senior Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan/Home Schooled) in 115th place (22:44), junior Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS), senior Rebekah Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) in 145th (22:54) and freshman Lauren Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) in 259th (24:10). Johns Hopkins took home the team title with 85 points followed by Williams with 137, Middlebury with 185 and Chicago with 261. Hope took ninth with 340 points giving the MIAA its first two top-10 finishes in an NCAA III women’s cross country national meet for the first time since 1993.

Calvin Men’s Cross Country 27th at NCAA III Championships

HANOVER, IN - The Calvin men’s cross country team took 27th on Saturday at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships, posting a team score of 589 points.  Junior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) was Calvin’s top finisher, placing 128th in a time of 26:06. Freshman Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) was close behind in 136th in a time of 26:10. Senior Philip Spitzer (Buckley/Buckley HS) was 161st (26:19) and sophomore Jeff Meitler (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) in 171st (26:24). Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were junior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) in 186th (26:28), senior Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) in 220th (26:43) and senior Jacob Kuyvenhoven (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 246th (27:08). St. Olaf won the men’s team title, upsetting top-ranked North Central with a first place score of 84 points with North Central second with 86. Wisconsin-LaCrosse was third (155) and Washington University of St. Louis fourth (167).

Women’s Basketball Defeats Ohio Wesleyan 70-60 at Baldwin-Wallace Tourney

BEREA, OH - The Calvin women’s basketball team continued early season non-conference play on Friday evening, traveling to Ohio to take part in the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational this weekend. Calvin came out on top in a first round matchup Friday night, defeating Ohio Wesleyan 70-60. Junior Breanna Verkaik led the Knights with 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior Kayla Engelhard added 15 points while junior Hannah Acre had 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting to go with five boards. The Knights, now 2-1, will play host Baldwin-Wallace tomorrow in the championship game at 4 p.m.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Kuyper 105-86 in Calvin Tip-off Tournament

Calvin improved to 2-0 on the year with a 105-86 victory over Kuyper College in the first round of the Calvin Tip-off Tournament Friday night at Van Noord Arena. Calvin will face the College of Faith (3-2) in the championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m. College of Faith defeated Grace Bible College 86-81 in Friday’s opening first round game. Five Calvin players notched double-digits in scoring led by senior Mickey DeVries with 23 points. Sophomore Jordan Daley had a career-high 17 points to go with a career-high six assists while junior Jordan Brink had 15 points and senior Tyler Kruis 14 points. Sophomore Austin Parks also chipped in with a career-high 13 points including three field goals from beyond the three-point arc.
