TACOMA, WA Ė The second-ranked Calvin womenís volleyball team completed a memorable two days of competition at the University of Puget Sound Premier Invitational on Saturday, defeating ninth-ranked Puget Sound and Whitman College in a pair of three-set matches. Calvinís win over Puget Sound came by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 25-19. It marked Calvinís third victory of the year against a nationally-ranked team as Puget Sound entered the match ranked ninth nationally. On Friday, Calvin topped 15th-ranked Wartburg and 21st-ranked Pacific Lutheran. Junior Emily Crowe (Mishawaka, IN/Granger HS) led the Calvin attack against Puget Sound with 10 kills and an attack percentage of .474. Sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and junior Stacey Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had seven and six kills respectively. Senior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) added 29 assists, 14 digs and seven kills. Senior Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a match-high 19 digs while junior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) chipped in with 13 digs. Freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) also contributed five block assists. Against Whitman, Calvin won by scores of 25-21, 25-15, 25-19. Maggie Kamp had a career-high 19 kills in the win including a hitting percentage of .562. Rietema had 33 assists and five block assists and Zietse 13 digs. Calvin will now prepare to open its MIAA schedule on Tuesday when it hosts Albion at 6:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

BATTLE CREEK Ė The Calvin menís golf team concluded competition at the two-day Olivet Lou Collins Memorial Tournament on Saturday. Calvin finished with a Saturday team score of 305, one day after shooting 311 to finish with a two-day total of 616. The competition was held at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Leading Calvin on Saturday were junior James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) and senior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) with rounds of 74. Sophomore Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) tallied a 76 while senior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an 81 and senior Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and 84. Calvin is back in action on September 5 when it competes at the first MIAA tournament of the year. The tournament will be hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club beginning at 1 p.m.

The Calvin womenís golf team opened its 2013 fall campaign in strong fashion by placing second at the Furniture City Classic with a team score of 339 strokes. Aquinas took first place with a score of 321 while Davenport was third at 341 and Hope fourth at 355. The competition was hosted by Davenport at the Mines Golf Course in Grand Rapids.Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) was superb for the Knights as she claimed medalist honors with a career-best round of 75. Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) also had a stellar day with a round of 82 that was good for sixth place individually. Rounding out Calvinís finishers were sophomore Jennie Pool (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) with a career-best score of 88 (10th place), sophomore Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS) with a Calvin career-best of 94, sophomore Jeryl Schudel (Adrian/Joy of Knowledge Tutorial) with a 101 and sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) with a 102. Calvin is back in action next Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Olivet Invitational.

DELAWARE, OH Ė For the second straight day, the Calvin menís soccer team was unable to hold on to a second half lead as the Knights suffered a 4-2 defeat to Kenyon College on the second day of competition at a tournament hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. Against Kenyon, Calvin grabbed a 2-0 halftime lead on a pair of first half goals by junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS). Vegter scored just 3:02 into the game off feeds from senior Zach Willis (Grandville/Unity Christian HS) and sophomore Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). He then scored unassisted on a 25-yard blast in the 30th minute of play. The second half proved to be a different tale however as the Lords of Kenyon exploded for four second half goals including three in a span of 16 minutes. Vegter and junior Reed Bowden (Uxbridge, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) were both named to the all-tournament team from Calvin. Calvin is back in action next Friday when it takes on Loras College in a tournament hosted by the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

The Calvin women’s soccer team got its season off to a fast start Saturday morning, scoring a goal less than a minute into the game and not looking back en route to a 5-0 victory over visiting Montreat (NC) College. Calvin received two goals from sophomore Taylor TenHarmsel and single goals from sophomore Paige Capel, senior Kelly Koets and sophomore Christina Drost. Calvin will travel to the Milwaukee School of Engineering for next weekend’s games. The Knights face the Duhawks of Loras at 5:00 pm Friday evening, and return to the pitch Saturday evening to play the Vikings of North Park at 6:00 pm.

TACOMA, WA - The second-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team pulled out a pair of come-from-behind victories on Friday at the University of Puget Sound Premier Invitational. Calvin opened the day with a 17-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-20 victory over 15th-ranked Wartburg and then topped Pacific Lutheran 21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-11, 15-12. Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces host and ninth-ranked Puget Sound at 3 p.m. (EST). The contest will be a rematch of last year’s NCAA III quarterfinal match that was played in Holland and won by Calvin in four sets. The Knights will then face Whitman College (Wash.) at 7 p.m. (EST).

DELAWARE, OH - The Calvin men’s soccer team was forced to swallow a bitter pill on Friday evening as the Knights dropped a 2-1 decision to nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan. The game was part of a season-opening tournament hosted by Ohio Wesleyan. Calvin took a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the 57th minute of play but the 21st-ranked Battling Bishops scored a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes of regulation to pull out the win. Calvin will face Kenyon College on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Ohio Wesleyan’s Roy Rike Field.

After graduating one of the most successful senior classes in the history of the program, the 2013 menís cross country team will feature some different faces this fall. In order to bring home the teamís 18th consecutive Great Lakes Regional title and 27th consecutive MIAA conference title, the Knights will need runners to step up and fill the roles that have been vacated by graduated runners.Calvin returns four runners that were selected to the All-MIAA Second Team last season. Seniors Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake County Lutheran HS) and Philip Spitzer (Buckley/Buckley HS) combine with juniors Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) and Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) to anchor the Knights running attack.

The Calvin women’s cross country team will head into the 2013 season with a sense of optimism as the Knights bring back a large group of returning letterwinners and a stellar incoming class of first-year runners. The 2012 version of the Knights captured their seventh MIAA title in the last eight years and later qualified for the NCAA III Championships, finishing 18th as a team. Head coach Brian Diemer thinks this year’s Calvin squad - ranked 11th in the Division III preseason Top 25 poll - has the capability of doing even more than last year’s team.2 3 >
