Warners and Rietema Provide Updates on Costa Rica Volleyball Tour

Calvin women’s volleyball coach Amber Warners is currently in the country of Costa Rica leading a team of AVCA Division II and III All-Americans which includes recent Hope graduate Greer Bratschie and Calvin senior Megan Rietema. Warners is writing blog entries for the AVCA website and in her latest entry, she explains what a thrilling week it has been thus far. Tom Snikkers Signs Professional Contract to Play Basketball in Netherlands

Tom Snikkers, a 2013 graduate of Calvin and former member of the men’s basketball team, has signed a contract to play for Aris Leeuwarden in the Dutch Basketball League.  Snikkers is eighth on Calvin’s all-time scoring list and is coming off a senior season where he led the Knights to an MIAA title, averaged 13.4 points per game and was named a Division III Honorable Mention All-American. Snikkers will be one of two Calvin graduates to be playing professional basketball overseas next year as 2005 graduate Dan Aultman is currently playing overseas in France. Snikkers is also the second student-athlete from Calvin this year to sign a professional contract as Joe Broekhuizen signed a pro contract with a team in the United Soccer League earlier this spring.

Track and Field Teams Receive Academic Honors from USTFCCCA

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams have once again received the All-Academic Team Award from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Calvin women’s team has now received the award 12 consecutive years while the Calvin men’s team has received the honor five straight years. In order to receive the award, a team needed to have posted a minimum 3.10 grade point average or better. The Calvin women’s team posted a 3.40 grade point average and was one of 148 teams to receive the award while the Calvin men’s team recorded a 3.18 grade point average and was one of 80 men’s teams to be so honored. In addition, seven members of the Calvin men’s track and field and five members of the Calvin women’s track and field team have received individual all-academic honors from the USTFCCCA. Both Calvin track and field teams were led by fourth-year head coach Bret Otte. His men’s and women’s teams have received the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Award all four years during his tenure.

Amber Warners to Lead AVCA Volleyball Team to Costa Rica

Calvin head volleyball coach Amber Warners is no stranger to traveling abroad. Next week however will provide a new adventure for the veteran coach as she will lead a group of nine players for a week of competition, service projects and instructional clinics in Costa Rica. Earlier this year, Warners was tabbed as the head coach of a team of nine volleyball players who received AVCA Division II or Division III All-America honors this past year. The trip is a combined venture between the AVCA and Athletes-International. Any player that was named an AVCA Division II or III All-American in 2012 was eligible to participate with athletes responsible for raising funds for their own travel expenses.

Calvin Tennis Team/Players Receive ITA All-Academic Honors

The Calvin College women’s tennis team has once again received Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Honors. In addition, four members of the Calvin women’s tennis team have received ITA All-Academic honors. The Calvin women’s tennis team was named a 2013 ITA All-Academic Team for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above. Calvin had had a 3.503 cumulative GPA this year. The members of the Calvin women’s tennis team that received individual honors included senior Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS), sophomore Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS), sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and freshman Anneke Knot (Flossmoor, IL/Illiana Christian HS). To receive the award, individuals must earn a varsity letter in tennis, carry at least a 3.5 grade point average for the 2012-13 academic year, and be enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).

Women’s Basketball Team Named to WBCA Academic Top 25 List

For the second consecutive year, the Calvin women’s basketball team has finished as one of the top academic squads in Division III. Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Knights have received the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Academic Honor Roll Award. The Knights finished 20th amongst all Division III schools with a team GPA of 3.485. The honor comes on the heels of a 2012-13 season that saw the Calvin women’s basketball team gain a share of the MIAA regular season title, receive a bid to the NCAA III Tournament and finish 23-4 overall. Calvin was one of three MIAA institutions to receive the WBCA Academic Honor Roll award as Hope and Olivet were also so honored. The WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll annually recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA and junior/community college institutions that carry the highest combined grade point averages inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season.

Tim Syrek Named Calvin Head Softball Coach

GRAND RAPIDS - Tim Syrek has been named the head coach of the Calvin softball program. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Valley State University, Syrek comes to Calvin from Otsego High School where he has served as an administrator and head varsity girls softball coach since 2000. At Otsego, he served as the Director of Community Education and Middle School Athletics. As the varsity softball coach, he fashioned a won-loss record of 403-207 including a school record 34-win season in 2009. He has also previously served as the high school varsity softball coach at Allegan High School and Big Rapids High School. In addition, he has served as an assistant softball coach with the District 2 Big League softball team for several years and was part of the District 2 team that captured the Big League World Series title in 2000 and finished runner-up three times.

Calvin Swimming and Diving Program Receives Academic Honors from CSCAA

The Calvin College swimming and diving program has received several academic awards from the College Swim Coaches Association of America. The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team has once again received the CSCAA Team Scholar All-America Award. The Team Scholar All American award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented twice annually, once in the fall semester/term and in the semester/term of the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships (Winter/Spring). The Calvin women’s team recorded a 3.36 grade point average during the recently completed spring semester.In addition, two swimmers have received the CSCAA Scholar All America Award while two additional swimmers have received CSCAA Scholar Honorable Mention All-America status.  Receiving CSCAA Scholar All-America honors from Calvin are Rachel Colasurdo and Kristy Kinzer while Kathryn Wrobel and Johnson Cochran have received CSCAA Scholar Schlar Honorable Mention All-America recognition.

Calvin Grads Find Success Working in Front Office of West Michigan Whitecaps

At Calvin College, the sports management major is still largely in its infancy.  2007 was the first year students graduated with a degree from the program, and as with anything new, there is bound to be an adjustment period.  Luckily, Calvin has seen three recent graduates see success working together in the box office of the Detroit Tigers’ single-A affiliate, the West Michigan Whitecaps.  Dean Exoo (’07) works in advertising and sales, while Nick Caudle (’07) and J.D. Triemstra (’09) are ticket sales executives.  All three spent time as student workers for Jim Timmer and went on to do graduate work in sports management at Western Michigan University.  Their work figures to add a strong dose of credibility to the program and encourage further success in current and incoming students.

Calvin Scholar-Athletes Named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll

The 2012-13 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and a record 151 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2012-13 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, seven are from Calvin.The seven Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a fourth straight year are seniors Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS), Eric Doornbos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Matt DeBoer (Hudsonville, MI/Covenant Christian HS), Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS), Kelsey Irwin (Fraser, MI, /Fraser HS), Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) and Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS).
