The Calvin College women’s swimming and diving team has received the Scholar All Academic Team citation from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for the 2012 fall semester.To be eligible, a team needed to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a four-point scale. The Calvin women’s team recorded a 3.28 grade point average. The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is coached by Dan Gelderloos.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball race is highly competitive every spring, and this season appears to be no different. Defending MIAA champion Trine and Alma, which won the conference tournament last season, are the co-favorites to win this season’s championship in a preseason poll of the league’s coaches. They each received 12 points in the poll, with the Thunder capturing five first-place votes and the Scots four. Coaches could not vote for their own team. Calvin was picked to finish seven the preseason poll. The Knights will feature a blend of veterans and newcomers this spring. Calvin will open its season this weekend with a Friday night doubleheader at Centre College. Calvin College is preparing to host the first-ever NCAA Division III Central Diving Regional. The two-day event will include divers from around the central region states and will be held inside Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center. Action will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. (EST) and will continue on Saturday at noon. Men’s and women’s divers will be seeking to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Championships on both the one and three-meter diving boards. Admission to spectators will be free for the weekend. A complete list of competitors and schedule of diving sessions is expected to be announced Wednesday afternoon when the list of declared divers is released. The winners of each (one and three-meter) diving competition will gain automatic berths to the NCAA III Championships. A further number of at-large berths will also be available. The number of berths available at Calvin’s regional should be announced no later than Thursday. Three members of the Calvin men’s basketball team have received post-season honors from the MIAA. Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are seniors Tom Snikkers and Bryan Powell while junior Tyler Kruis has been named to the All-MIAA second team. Snikkers is receiving first team All-MIAA honors for the third straight year while Powell and Kruis are being so honored for the first time. Calvin is currently ranked 12th nationally and will carry a 24-3 record into a first round NCAA III Tournament game at 19th-ranked Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, Indiana. The first round game, scheduled for 7 p.m. (EST), is the only one of 31 men’s basketball first round matchups featuring two teams in the top 20.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced its All-MIAA women’s basketball team for the 2012-13 season. Calvin center Carissa Verkaik was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player for an unprecedented fourth consecutive season. Verkaik, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), became the MIAA’s all-time career scoring leader this year, finishing with 1,219 points in 64 league games. She led the league this year in scoring (20.8 points per game in conference play), rebounding (8.7 per game), blocked shots (3.4 per game) and free throw shooting (.942). She also became just the third player in MIAA women’s basketball history to be named to the all-conference first team all four years of her career.In addition, Verkaik and Calvin sophomore Kayla Engelhard (Unionville/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) were both named to the All-MIAA first team. Verkaik is receiving All-MIAA first team accolades for the fourth straight year. She is the third individual in MIAA women’s basketball history to do so and all have come from Calvin. The other two are 2007 Calvin graduate Lisa Winkle and 2009 Calvin graduate Marcia Harris. Engelhard meanwhile is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time in her career. Engelhard is averaging 9.3 points and 3.2 rebounds a game this year. Meanwhile, Calvin senior Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was named to the All-MIAA second team. Hilbrands averaged 7.9 points and 5.9 rebounds a game this year coming off the bench. Calvin is scheduled to travel to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, this weekend. Calvin will take on the University of St. Thomas in a first round game Friday night at Cornell College.

The Calvin College women’s basketball team is headed to Mount Vernon, Iowa, for an NCAA III region hosted by Cornell College. Calvin (23-3) will face St. Thomas (22-5) in a first round game at 6 p.m. (EST) while host Cornell (24-1) will face St. Scholastica (13-14) in the other first round contest at 8:30 p.m. (EST). Friday’s winners will play Saturday night at 8 p.m. (EST). The Calvin/St. Thomas game will feature a pair of familiar opponents as Calvin and St. Thomas have met twice in a span of less than a year. St. Thomas defeated Calvin 83-72 in overtime in the 2012 national quarterfinals in Chicago, Illinois. The two opponents then met each other in the 2012-13 season opener in November at a tournament hosted by Millikin University with Calvin prevailing 78-72. Calvin, ranked third in the most recent poll by d3hoops.com, has made quarterfinal appearances in 2005, 2007 and 2012. St. Thomas fell to George Fox in last year’s national semifinals. Calvin is 18-14 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play. Calvin will be making its seventh NCAA III Tournament appearance under head coach John Ross.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Tyler Kruis its Player of the Week in men’s basketball for games played through February 23. Kruis, a junior from Grand Rapids (Grandville Calvin Christian HS), averaged 13.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots in helping the Knights win their first MIAA tournament since 2007. He scored 15 points and added four blocked shots in a 71-44 semifinal win over Adrian, then had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds as Calvin defeated Hope, 77-57, in the tournament championship game. Kruis, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career, shot 58 percent from the field (7 of 12) and 75 percent from the free-throw line (12 of 16) for the tournament. Calvin is headed to the NCAA III Tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Calvin will travel to Rose-Hulman Institute for a first round game Saturday at 7 p.m. (EST).

The Calvin College men’s basketball team is back in the NCAA III Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Knights will travel to Terre Haute, Ind, for a one-game regional against host Rose-Hulman on March 2. The game is slated to start at 7:00 p.m. EST. Calvin (24-3), which is making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2007 and 18th overall, will play the Engineers of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (24-3). Calvin won the MIAA Tournament to earn its automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Rose-Hulman, ranked 23rd in the most recent poll by d3hoops.com, earned its birth by winning the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament title. The meeting will be the first ever between the two teams. Calvin has played two members of the Heartland Athletic Conference this season. The Knights recorded a 98-56 win over Anderson (IN) on Nov. 20 as well as an 87-63 victory over Manchester (IN) on Nov. 27. Calvin, ranked 15th in the same poll, is 30-18 in NCAA III Tournament games for a .625 winning percentage. The Knights are 12-5 in tournament play under head coach Kevin Vande Streek.

The NCAA III Tournament fields for men’s and women’s basketball will be announced on Monday with the men’s field set to be announced at 12:30 p.m. with the women’s field to be announced at 2:30 p.m. The selection show for men’s and women’s basketball will be available via a live video stream at: NCAA.com The Calvin men’s basketball team has earned an automatic berth into the NCAA III Tournament field while the women’s team has a strong chance to receive an at-large bid. On Tuesday, a special NCAA III Tournament lunch will take place inside the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex that is open to the public and is sponsored by the Calvin C’ Club. The lunch will take place inside the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex lobby from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26. The Calvin basketball coaching staff will preview the 2013 Tournament for Knight fans. Mike Le Febre (1992) and Aaron Winkle (2000), alumni players who experienced a tournament run all the way to a national championship, will share some stories of the games and plays that they remember well. Q-and-A time, too. All are welcome. The Knight Way Cafe will offer lunch specials, so you can grab a meal and a chair and talk tournament basketball with other Knights. ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams both posted first place performances at the Trine Invitational Saturday. On the men’s side, Calvin recorded 172.5 points with Trine taking second with 112 points. On the women’s side, Calvin recorded 172 points with Hope taking second with 112 points. The highlight of the meet for Calvin came on the women’s side as its distance medley relay team of senior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS), junior Rebekah Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) and senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) took first place in a season-best time of 12:02.58.
