Day Two Complete at Calvin Winter Invitational

In a long morning and early afternoon of prelims on Friday, Calvin saw nine individuals advance to the finals in 12 events. Despite a strong day in the pool, the women are in fourth place with 242 points while the men dropped from second to fourth with 263 points. Northern Michigan held its lead on the women’s side with 348 points while Grand Valley kept the top spot on the men’s side with 423 points. The Calvin women had two first place performances as senior Elizabeth Counsell won the 100 breaststroke and senior Samantha Klaasen won the three-meter board with a score of 438.65 points.

Swim Teams Off to Fast Starts at Winter Invitational - Meindertsma Shatters School Mark in 1650

Calvin’s three-day Winter Invitational began Thursday evening. Teams participating included Division I Valparaiso University, Division II schools Grand Valley State University, Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University and University of Indianapolis as well as MIAA schools Kalamazoo, Olivet, and Saint Mary’s and fellow Division III school Wabash College. The Calvin women head into day two in fifth place with 49 points. Northern Michigan leads with 91 total points. The Calvin men are in second after the first day of competition with 75 points, Grand Valley leads with 127. The biggest highlight for Calvin came on the men’s side as freshman Caleb Meinderstma shattered the Calvin men’s 1650 yard freestyle record by swimming a 16:16.47, good for second individually. The previous record was held by Brad Flikkema, set in 1998 at 16:28.80. Freshman Aaron Venema was barely off that record time, swimming to a fourth place time of 16:31.06. Senior Mathias Bares added points for the Knights, finishing in 14th overall at 17:03.35.

Women’s Basketball Picks Up 77-42 Win at Albion in MIAA Opener

ALBION - The Calvin women’s basketball team opened the MIAA portion of its schedule Wednesday night, traveling to Albion College’s Kresge Gymnasium to face the Britons. The Knights got off to a hot start and did not look back, earning the 77-42 win as Calvin shot 47%, 10-for-25 from three point range. The Knights jumped out to an early 16-5 lead, led by sophomore Kayla Engelhard. Engelhard, who was named MIAA player of the week last week, picked up right where she left off, scoring 10 of Calvin’s first 16 points. Every Knight earned playing time while each player put points into the stat sheet. Engelhard led Calvin on offense with 17 points and four assists. Verkaik added 14 points and six rebounds, while seniors Kelsey Irwin and Heather DeKleine and freshman Abby VanderWoude all chipped in six.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Manchester University 87-63

MANCHESTER, IN Ė The Calvin College menís basketball team traveled to Manchester to take on the Spartans of Manchester University Tuesday night in a Great Lakes regional contest.  Calvin defeated Manchester 87-63 to improve to 6-0 on the season.  Four Knights scored in double figures.  Senior guard Bryan Powell (Wyoming/Wyoming Park) led Calvin with 13 points.  Snikkers fell one rebound short of a double-double ending the game with 12 points and nine rebounds.  Sophomores Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian) and Dykstra had ten points apiece.  Sophomore Dan Stout (Escondido, CA/Calvin Christian) chipped in a career-high nine points off the bench.  Calvin shot 47.1 percent from the field in the contest, including 8 of 21 behind the three point arc.  The Spartans shot 38.3 percent and were led by Flores and sophomore guard Silas Sims (Hope, IN/Hauser) who scored 18 and 17 points respectively.  Calvin is now 6-0 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.  The Knights will travel to Wheaton, Ill. this weekend for the annual CCIW-MIAA Classic.  Calvin will face host Wheaton on Friday at 8:00 p.m. CST and Carthage (WI) at 1:00 p.m. CST on Saturday.

Kayla Engelhard Named MIAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich.  Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin guard Kayla Engelhard its Player of the Week in womenís basketball for games played through Nov. 25.

Engelhard, a sophomore from Unionville (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS), averaged 19 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists in leading the Knights to three consecutive wins for the week. She scored a career-high 37 points and added seven rebounds as Calvin rallied from a 10-point deficit with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time for an 84-75 overtime win at Thomas More, Ky., and followed with 14 points and four assists the next night in a 76-48 victory over Centre, Ky. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the Thomas More tournament.  Engelhard, who made 54 percent of her shots from the field (21 of 39) and 82 percent from the line (14 of 17) for the week, is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Men’s Basketball Defeats Cornerstone 70-65 in Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin College menís basketball team faced nationally-ranked Cornerstone University Saturday night in the final day of the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic.  Calvin defeated Cornerstone 70-65 to win the classic for the first time since 2010.  Calvin took a 39-33 lead into halftime.  Senior Bryan Powell (Wyoming/Wyoming Park) sparked the Knights coming off the bench with 13 points hitting five of seven first half field goals.  Senior David Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) had eight points and four assists.  Sophomore Jordan Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian), who was named tournament MVP, led the Knights with 14 points including a perfect eight of eight from the free throw line.  Senior Tom Snikkers (Hudsonville/Unity Christian), who joined Brink on the all-tournament team, chipped in 13 points.  Powell had 13 points including three of four beyond the three-point arc.  Mason and Hudson led the Golden Eagles with 20 and 16 points respectively in defeat.  Calvin, now 5-0 for the first time since the 2000-01 season, will travel to Manchester College Tuesday, November 27, for an in-region game with the Spartans.

Women’s Basketball Tops Centre 76-48 at Julie Costello Memorial Classic

A quick turnaround saw the Calvin women’s basketball team face Centre College Saturday afternoon less than a day after defeating host Thomas More in a thrilling overtime victory in the Julie Costello Memorial Classic. The Knights showed no signs of fatigue and dominated Centre, winning 76-48. Senior Carissa Verkaik led the charge with 20 points, six rebounds and five blocks. Sophomore Kayla Engelhard added 14 points, while Irwin scored nine, DeKleine eight, and Springer seven. Senior Ally Wolffis grabbed 12 rebounds for the Knights, five on the offensive glass. Both Verkaik and Engelhard were named to the All-Tournament team, with Engelhard earning MVP honors for her combined 51 points in a pair of games against Thomas More and Centre.

Women’s Basketball Pulls Out Epic Overtime Victory Over Thomas More at Julie Costello Classic

Traveling to Crestview Hills, Kentucky to face Thomas More in the first round of the Julie Costello Memorial Classic, Calvin played against host and in-region foe Thomas More. The Knights came into the match at 2-1 overall and ranked No. 5 in the nation, while the Saints were twelfth nationally and 3-0 overall. Trailing by double digits with under three minutes left in regulation, Calvin mounted a furious comeback to pull out an 84-75 overtime win. Senior Kelsey Irwin hit a game-tying triple in the closing seconds and the Knights rolled in overtime. The Knights were led on offense by sophomore guard Kayla Engelhard, who scored a career high 37 points and grabbed seven rebounds, shattering her previous high of 21 points. Senior Carissa Verkaik collected a near triple-double with 16 points, 17 rebounds and eight blocks. The double-double was the 40th of Verkaik’s career. Irwin added 11 points off the bench.

Calvin men’s basketball defeats Aquinas 58-55 in Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic

HOLLAND - The Calvin men’s basketball team opened play in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament with a 58-55 victory over Aquinas College at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin is now 4-0 on the season. Aquinas had won seven of its eight prior meetings with Calvin but the Knights were able to gain a lead late in the first half and hold on the rest of the way. Junior Tyler Kruis had 13 points to lead the Knights while sophomore Jordan Brink had 11 points and sophomore Tom Snikkers 10 points. Calvin shot 41.4 percent from the floor in each half. Calvin will face Cornerstone at 6 p.m. on Saturday on the second day of the tournament. Calvin is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
